I just recently adopted a Hunter 19 81-83. It has seen many years of granny sailing in local waters and it is my hope to let her run free in coming seasons. We sail very shallow sandy bottom waters on the Great South Bay of Long Island. Over the years the original spring up rudder assembly has given way to a bastardized system that employs a galvanized nail to hold the rudder in a lowered position. Should the rudder find bottom it surely will either dig in hard, break or worse.. I would like to return to the original design, but can find not pictures or details of the setup. Alternately, I have pondered a system that would attach a line from the bottom of the tiller to the top of the rudder, where the tiller could be used as a lever to lower the rudder and the line could be stopped in a jam cleat to be released quicjkly if needed. Has anyone done anything close to this? Or, could anyone offer closeup pictures of the original design? Thanks in advance!

I'll post photos when I get the time

Good to hear about another early eighties H19 being put back together! When I get a chance I'll post some photos. Time permitting I'll try and disassemble it and show you all the parts. Good Luck, Nicholas M. Ellis

Sounds like you want a kick up rudder. You may wnat to look at for example a kick up rudderr for a Catalina or formely Capri 18 and modifying it. Of course you will need new attachments for the stern. Just one more idea Crazy Dave Condon
