15 and 6 could weigh the same

If you look at the Mercury marine specs, you'll see that in a class, like 2 stroke 2 cylinder models, they are all basically the same motor with different horsepower ratings. My 15 actually weighs less than the 6! jv

Motor weights

I have a 10hp elec. start Chrysler on my Catalina 22 The electric start is the best invention yet especially with the up-front f-n-r shift. When I was having it serviced this winter, I learned that everything from the 7.5 up to the 12hp is basically the same motor with just changes in carburation and timing. The weights are the same.

Catalina 18 Motor Selection

The motor bracket manufacturer for your boat recommends that a 15 H.P. maximum engine should not be exceeded. Catalina recommends a 4-6 H.P. to be adequate. A larger engine will not increase hull speed and may add unnecessary weight in the stern. I own an '87 Capri 18 and recently purchased a Tohatsu 4-stroke, 4H.P. It's quiet and works just fine.
