So my halyard for the main is at the top of the mast. Short of dropping the mast or going aloft in a bosun chair..... anybody got any wisdom on the sybject??

Do you have another halyard?

If you do, use it to hoist a length of pvc pipe taller than your mast up, with a hook on the end. Maneuver it around, grab the main halyad, and retrieve it. I take no credit for this - just remember seeing it on the board

Go to the local hardware

get 3 or 4 pieces of plastic pipe. Make a hook of wire (#9 ceiling wire should be good)and tape it to one end. Have a friend, one that won't laugh too much, sit in the cockpit with field glasses. It helps to paint the hook a bright color, so you can see it. The pipe is less flexible if it has a thicker wall. It's not easy, but it is possible. Good luck.

If it will make you feel any better,

met a guy and his wife who on their maiden voyage with their brand new Catalina 25 lost their halyard inside the mast when he tried to tighten the sail a wee bit more. Novelman and I retrieved his jib halyard by duct taping a straightened clothes hanger to the main halyard. I cut the hooked end with a sharp bevel. Worked like a charm without the PVC, although I can see where the PVC could help. It took about 15 min most of which was walking back to the truck to get the coat hangar. Frank

Every one who sails

has lost, or will one day lose, a halyard up the mast. My favorite remedy is money. Hire a kid from the rigging shop to go up and get it. Last time this happened to me it cost $15. Probably up to $20 now.... but worth it.

Been thar...done that!.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

In fact, I had both halyards run up the mast accidentally during the last sailing season, at different times of course. Not wanting the hassles of dropping the mast, I duct taped two extended whisker poles together and secured a coathanger hook to the end of one with duct tape. Then it was just a matter of balance while reaching the snap schackle with the hook. Simple and it worked. Good luck!
