Anyone have an educated guess as to the value of a 30 year old never flown mainsail? Sail is full batten (4), one reef, luff 32.25, foot 11.50. Dacron, guessing 7 oz. fabric. Maker unknown. Assuming that the sail is not dry rotted and in usable condition, what's it worth? I'm considering purchasing and will be able to refuse if it's not serviceable, but I need to make an offer.

maybe $1500 new value?

Larry: I am guessing that it may be around $1500 for a new sail with those specs. I doubt that there would be any "dry rot" if the sail is NEW. A lot has to do with the material that the sail was made from and how it was made. If you are really interested, I would suggest that you take the sail to a sail maker and let them do an evaluation on it for you. Just because a sail in 7 oz. cloth does not really mean much. What quality of cloth is this and what is the quality of the stitching?

re:maybe $1500 new value?

Steve, Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping to get a sailmakers opinion before I make a firm offer. I can buy a new sail here thru Sailboatowners, for around $1200.

30 year old value....

Unless it is a crisp as a brand new sail, $350 max. 30 year old used sails are about $150. You can find new sails for $1100. think hard! r.w.landau

The Bacon Sails "Poke Test Sheet" link below

How does the sail look? Has it been in a bag? If it was stored folded or rolled, the threads may have a kink on the inside folds. Probably wouldn't bother a cheapskate cruiser like me if the price is good. After you do the poke test and read Bacon's sail rating sheet, go to their homepage and search sails near that size for a price check. Are you sure it's full batten? That means the battens go all the way across the sail to the mast. It's a modern feature that would make the sail worth more than a sail with regular short battens.

R.W and Fred

Fred, The sail has been in a bag, and stored off the boat. The full batten design is what I was told, and I have to wonder if that is correct.I'll know when I see it.I'm sorta cheep too, so a kink here and there isn't a problem. More concerned with brittle fabric and rotten thread. R.W., Our thinking is about the same. I made an offer of $300 on condition of approval.

Larry, Please know I have NEVER made

a wise nor fruitful sailing deal. (I like to sleep at night, I can't take more than what I think something is worth) As I was once told... The value of an item is what someone will pay for it. I have bought things worth more than it's value, because it is what I thought I needed. Another thought is "a sucker comes along every 30 minutes. They are as steady as the transite system."(also said about girlfriends) Larry, get it for what you can... I was just telling you what I thought you would get it for. r.w.landau

LIke minded

r.w. And I appreciate your forthrightness. I'm the same way. I've over paid many more times than not. It tends to even out in the long run though. I've been given boats for $1 and then turned them and made a little money to fund the addiction. It all works out. Larry
