Help with kill switch on Yanmar 2QM15

Over the weekend my kill switch finally gave up the ghost. I had thought I had devised a repair that would work but this weekend the repair also gave up. The problem I have is that the part that holds the kill switch cable onto the engine bracket broke ages ago (before I bought the boat). I had devised a repair which has since given up the ghost. Without a means of keeping the cable housing stationary the kill switch can't move the govenor lever into the stop position. The challenge is that the part that holds the kill switch cable housing onto the engine bracket is no longer available. At least not from my dealer. Essentially I am looking to contact another dealer lying around or an individual that might have this part from an old engine. Any other ideas? alternate kill switch mechanisms? Going down into the cabin to shut the engine down every time is truly annoying... Thanks all! David

Ihave spoken to Torreson's, unfortunately the part is absolutely NLA The Teleflex/Morse link is helpful as it gives me an idea for how I might repair using some parts I have... What a great resource this site is! David

Kill cable

I recently bought a new kill cable for my 2QM15. From La Borde in Slidell, La. It came with the end fitting I think you are describing. Cost for the entire cable was something like 15 bucks. Had it in a couple of days. La Borde is a Yanmar distributor for the SE. Didn't try to buy the end fitting as the cable itself was bad, but it did come with that end fitting.

Another thought

I'm not at my boat right now, but if your talking about the little metal bracket that the cable goes through, which doesn't come with a new cable, check out the bracket that is made to hold the compression release cable. If memory serves me right, this is a similar part, and may be you could adapt it to use on the kill cable.

Actually my cable

The piece that I need to find or fabricate holds the cable jacket to the engine bracket allowing the cable core to move. Without this piece the entire cable moves when the kill switch is pulled. I am going to try and work on a fix this weekend. I think I can use a couple of small cable clamps, one on either side of the bracket to stop the cable from moving and then secure the clamps to the bracket.

small hose clamps

David: I replaced my stop cable many years ago and faced the same problem. We just attached two small hose clamps on the end of the cable and it has worked fine for over 10 years.

That looks like the setup I need

I may use some safety wire to ensure the cable doesn't vibrate out of the slot in the stop bracket.

Kill switch

I replaced my cable-operated switch with a solenoid setup and a mometary pushbutton, which I feel is more reliable and neater looking.
