I bought a new toilet & Shields "148" 1 1/2 (one and one half) inch sanitation hose. Although the hose fits fine at the toilet & pumpout fitting, I cannot get the hose on to the fittings at the holding tank. I tried lubrication and shaving some of the inside of the hose, but no way will it go on. The fittings are smooth (no barbs) and are stamped "1 1/2", but I measured them and they're more like 1 9/16. What am I missing here?

Boiling Water

I have had good luck heating water to boiling and then letting the end of the hose sit in it a while. That and a water-soluble lube. Rick D.

Get different fittings.

For reasons known only to the plumbing industry, nominal hard PVC 1.5 thread x 1.5 barbed fittings are actual 1.5 x 1 5/8...impossible to get a hose onto...I don't know why the industry continues to sell the damn things, 'cuz they've been a major thorn in the side of anyone who's had to replace hoses for the last 20 years. Btw, this anomoly ONLY applies to 1.5" thread-barb fittings...every other nominal and actual sizes are the same. However, Marelon and nylon 1.5 thread x 1.5 barb are actual 1.5 x 1.5....so get thee to a boat store for new Marelon or nylon thread-barb tank fittings and your troubles will be over ...That is, if you just warm the hose a little with a blow dryer and use a little dish soap on othe outside of the fitting and the inside of the hose. Whatever you do, do NOT try to heat the hose enough to get it onto the PVC fittings...you'll damage the hose.
