I need help in finding the hidden HIN plate on a 1979 CAL 2-27.

The current HIN that is shown on the transom shows as invalid when I check it out on BoatFax and other similar sites.

The current HIN begins with the following MIC - CAB. When I check the USCG database, the manufacturer comes up as Stroker. Stroker is a Bass Boat manufacturering company in Tennessee that started in the mid 80's.

When I checked on Saliboatdata.com for the CAL 2-27 manufacturer(s) it comes up with 2 companies. Jensen Marine/CAL Boats and Bangor Punta Corp. Jensen's MIC is DUA while Bangor Punta is JEN. I know, go figure.

I would appreciate any CAL owners, especially CAL 27 owners, let me know what the first 3 characters are on their HIN. I need to know if what I have found is correct or not.

Thank you.

Happy and Safe Boating!

Your HIN is moulded into the transom. There is no such thing as a HIN plate. I don’t have the HIN code translation with me, but a detailed search will get you the details. Also, there was a change in the code structure somewhere in the early ‘70s. CAB was the code for CAL boats back when they were being made. It has since been reassigned to a stink pot manufacturer. In 1979 they were made by Jensen in California.
Your HIN should be similar to my 1979 CAL 2-25:
CAB = CAL sailboats
The next letter is the model designation (A = 2-25, B = 2-27 maybe?)
The next four numbers followed by the M (are the sequence number of that model).
Next you should have a 79 to show the year that the hull was made (not when the boat was completed) with the last letter (A-L) showing the month with A=August, B=September, etc.
Have a look at http://sealsspars.com and http://sailboatdata.com for a lot of good info on your great CAL sailboat.

Actually, there may be a hull plate. Boats built before 1972 were not required to have a HIN molded into the hull. Many of those had hull plates and in some cases the state may have assigned a hull number if the boat was missing the plate or was otherwise unreadable. My 1970 Cal 29 for example has a hull plate attached to the stern with a HIN issued by the state of Massachusetts. So my HIN starts with MSZ

His said his boat is a 1979 CAL 2-27. All of the CAL sailboats, from around 1975 and newer, that I've seen up here in the Great White North have the molded HIN number with the format I described.
