Greetings all. As the water level in our St. Johns river has dropped some this week, I find my rudder dragging in the mud in my slip. Moved foward ok today, but backing in was interesting. ( I know, should have gone in bow first, but my 4 1/2 year old has a time getting on and off the boat that way) The person I bought the boat from basically bolted the rudder in place, I can't seem to raise it up with the rope set up. Does anyone have either pictures or a page from the manual on how this should be set up so I can raise the rudder when I have to? I have a piece meal manual that I purchased from Hunter, but nothing on this part. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!!

Up?

The foam rudder on an H22 floats up when the line is released, providing the upper rudder case is not solidly in contact. there should be 2 neoprene or plastic bushings inside to help keep the action smooth. There is no rope to pull it down. Take good care of that rudder, they aren't cheap.

Oh boy.....

Should float, huh? when I uncleat the rope, nothing happens. There appear to be two pieces to my rudder, a white part inside of a black "housing". The rope attaches to the white part, I can see that when I raise the tiller up, but nothing happens at all. One of the bolts, the bottom one is severely rusted, think that has anything to do with it? I'd love to take her off and fix it, but as you know, the rudder sits under the hull and unless I can raise it, I can't get it off the boat to work on it. Thanks for any help, and also for the heads up on the value of it. David G. "Sea Monkeys"

If the 22 is like my h23 you should be able to simply lift the whole asselbly up and off of the pintles, those are the small stainless pins that the whole housing sits on , there may be some sort of keeper or retainer on yours but I doubt it, once you have lifted the rudder housing up and off you can get a better look at it . it could be the two parts you are refering to is simply where someone bottom painted the part of the rudder that is in the water, some people who have owned these boats have felt that the kick up feature is bothersome and have done things to make them not kick up , once you have it off it should be easy enough to determine what they have done and just reverse the process it may be they simply overtightened the bolt it pivots on or they may have drilled another hole and inserted another bolt, I hope this helps, if not you can email me at mmsailor@aol,com good luck Mike B

Thanks....

Looks like I'll have to get down in the water and try to loosen that rusted bolt. I figured there wasn't much to it, but thought I'd ask the experts. There are two bolts on mine, one's rusted. Is that the usual configuration? David G. "sea monkeys"

Only one bolt

There should be a 3/8" or 1/2" line attatched to the top of the bottom bart of the rudder inside the housing. From there it goes out the housing over a pulley, up the back of the housing (outside) through a cam cleat and finally ties off on a cleat on the top or side of the tiller. Like I said, it's strictly for pulling the rudder down tight. Only one bolt should go through the bottom part of the rudder, and the housing should NOT be tight to it. The rudder should lift off the pintles easily. If not look for a small piece of SS near the top of the upper pintle on the transom. There may be a catch there as there is on mine. It keeps the rudder from detaching in heavy seas. (rather important)
