Help with Furler upgrade

I currently have a Hood 915 LD furler for the headsail. The bearings are starting to go and the drum is cracked a bit but still functional. I called Hood to get replacement bearing and a new drum. They informed me that the cost to replace the bearings and replace the drum would be around $500. They then told me of an upgrade special they were running. For $663 the would sell me the drive unit for the 900SL. I would then need to also buy a new line at a cost of $125. I like the idea of having a reefing furling system. My question is has anyone had any experience with this upgrade ? Also are there any drawbacks to the 900SL that I should be concerned about ? Will I need to have any sail work done ( i.e. luff pad ) to be able to reef the headsail ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Um.

Michael - I don't know enough about those units to advise you about the upgrade, but I think that $125 for a furling line is a bit excessive! Check your local marine supplier before you order the line from Hood. Justin - O'day Onwers' Web

upgrade

I had the same question on O'Day 28 CDI System. The problem I found was the fact that after closer inspection I found the complete system was worn out (all parts same age). I chose to replace with a complete new system (Harken); not cheap but I think better in the long run. Good Luck

Retrofit it

I did the same thing 5 years ago and have had no regrets. The ability to reef properly in more servere conditions make it advantageous to add a luff foam for sail shape when reefed. Hood may not be the very best choice but for the money savings and ease of conversion as opposed to a Profurl which would have been my first choice except for the $2000 price tag.

A response to the O'Day 28 with CDI

There aren't to many parts to wear on a CDI. I would say the problem is with the plastic bearing (if indeed it is plastic) as is typical for the FF4/FF6 models. A ball bearing option is available through sailnet for about $65. Unless the other parts are severly damaged, I would think this would be the best way to go. The CDI is quite a nice system with the ball bearing upgrade. I personally think it sucks with the plastic bearing. Please excuse the language. Russ Marcks
