I am a new owner the boat came with a 155%genoa and a schaefer 2100 snap furler I am sailing from newport to charleston and am concerned about high winds any opinions on furling the gennie down to 100 or less and buying a storm sail or should i purchse a 90% and furl it thanx

If it was me and I was starting a long trip, I would want to have more than one headsail in my possession. It doesn't sound like a bad idea to get a working jib that can be reefed down to storm jib size. I would prefer to have a working jib and a storm jib. I don't think you will want to have a your full size genny out at all during the winds we get at this time of year. As inexperienced as I am, I wouldn't even be contemplating a trip from Newport RI to Charleston in November.

Sail Size
We just left Sandy Hook area a couple of weeks ago, with a new to us Seidelman 37. The boat had a 170 on it, with roller furling. Now after the Chesapeake, the 170 is blown out. I know, my fault. Anyway we also have a 110, but haven't changed it yet. This time of the year, from what I have seen in this area, I would go for a heavier made 110. If you use the 155 probably should reef it just a tad more than you think you should. The larger gusts come up quick, and really put a lot of stress with that much sail area. Also depends on how heavy the 155 is. If it is a light weight sail, be very careful, unless your best friend is a sailmaker.
