Hi, I am just dropping by to see if I can get some help with this: I am working on a 3D image and I am going to place a sailboat in it. I will be modeling the sailboat in 3D and I need to know: -What type of boat would be out in the middle of the ocean "exploring" for fun (like in terms of a 40 footer or so) -What configuration it would be in if it were just going to motor in to check out the inside of this island (i.e. would the sails be rolled up or what): http://img138.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img138&image=apftnwip7ha.jpg -Would you ever drop anchor and rest inside an island like this if a storm was coming or something, or would it be too risky... -And if anyone has a site with reference photos of such a sailboat (or technical drawings) that would be awesome. Thanks for the help, hope this isn't too off-topic for the board. -Marc

I probably wouldn't

Your Island does not appear to be a very inviting refuge, to me ... 1. The Island appears to be rather “steep to”, and I would expect the Cove to have rather deep water (for safe anchoring). 2. Sailors would normally prefer to enter an unfamiliar anchorage with the sun to their back.

Lummi Island

Hey Gord; looks a bit like Inlet bay on Lummi Is. just across from Bellingham. I think a Fuji 35 under jib & mizzen would look good there.

Another update...

Thanks for the help so far. I found some images of the Fuji 35 and am slowly adding details and getting the overall shape down: http://img83.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img83&image=island9pwip1jb.jpg What does "under jib & mizzen" mean? Sorry, wish I knew more about this stuff.

Looks like a good start.

Creative! Nice choice of sailboat! The jib is the sail that is the forward triangle between the main (forward)mast and the bow. The mizzen is the sail in the triangle behind the mizzen (rear) mast and the boom. The water looks a little smooth and glassy so the boat would probably be coming in under power with the sails down. You could show the mainsail furled on the boom and protected with a cover. The whole thing looks out of context though because the island is small and the cove is way too small for this sailboat to sail into. Could you enlargen the whole island and cove, with slopes that are more gentle? These sheer slopes are not realistic and the boat would not likely want to enter the cove. The water would look more exciting if you could create more swell with some whitecaps to indicate the wind. Then you would need to slant the boat as if the wind is pushing it over (called heeling). The sunset is very nice but it would be spectacular if it was less dark and more vibrant with violet and orange shadings. I think that could be realistic. Good luck and great start! Scott

How about this...

...what if the Fuji is sitting a bit off to the left and a little zodiac or something was going in to explore the inside? Do boats like this one carry inflatables or whatnot? Thanks for the tips, if I can manage whitecaps on this water I may as well just go down and apply at Pixar, but I'll give it a try :) Thanks, Marc PS I seem to remember Lummi island...I did some sailing in the San Juans and such when I was a teenager. One time we took out the Sea Scouts' "Odyssey" for a week. Lots of fun.

opinion

Your boat should be 1/5 the size that it is with the sun at the extreme right, lighting the way into the cove. Lower hills on the inside of the island would give it more of a lagoon look, alternately, you could give your island a reef 1/3 the size of the island, out, with the sb anchored inside the cove. ie take the picture from a lower angle looking into the lagoon.
