I'm a new boat owner and never winterized my boat before bringing it out of water. Now the marina has shut off the water also. Is their still a way to winterize my engine? It's a 27'Pacehip with a 8h.p. Yanmar diesel engine. Thanks.

Any system on the boat which uses or stores fresh water needs to be winterized by pumping out the fresh water and replacing it RV antifreeze. (Fresh water storage tank, water lines, water heater.....) In the current issue of BoatUS, there is a winterizing section with recomendations....hope this helps.

Winterize on the hard
Steve If you can carry a full bucket up onboard, you should have no problem. Usually, the marina will still have water on at the travel lift pit. Remove the raw water intake hose from the thru-hull and place it in a bucket with antifreeze and turn over then engine long enough to run the antifreeze through until you get it coming out the exhaust. Only real cautions are to ensure the hull in well blocked and the transmission is in neutral. Alternatively, there are drains on either side of the block but the exhaust riser and muffler may be problematic to drain. Don

Winterize sanitation and fresh water systems.
You don't need water for that...you need to get rid of what's on board. Here are the instructions for winterizing your plumbing: Fresh water system 1. Drain the water tanks completely (just turn on all the faucets). 2. Drain water heater. Most have a drain petcock; follow manufacturer’s instructions to find it and use it. Remove both the inlet and outlet hoses, and if necessary use a shop vac to be sure of gettting all the water out of it. 3.Connect water heater inlet and outlet hoses together. Bypass kits for this purpose are available from boat stores and RV supply stores. 4. Add non-toxic antifreeze ("the pink stuff") and pump that through the system until all outlets--hot and cold in the galley, head, shower, and any deck wash--run only antifreeze. Leave all the faucets open to make sure there is no pressure in the system. Sanitation system 1. Pump holding tank out, then rinse thoroughly by completely filling with fresh water and 1 gallon of white vinegar twice. 2. Close toilet intake through-hull, disconnect inlet hose and stick it in a gallon of non-toxic ("the pink stuff") antifreeze. Pump the whole gallon through the system into the holding tank. Do not reconnect head intake hose to the through-hull. 3. Pump the head 50 times to get as much fluid out of the system as possible. 4. After the boat comes out of the water, open all the sea cocks to drain any trapped water. Do not use antifreeze in a Lectra/San or PuraSan. Follow manufacturers instructions to winterize all Type I and II MSDs.

As Don mentioned, it is a simple matter to winterinze your engine while on the hard (ie, pull off the raw water intake hose and stick in a bucket full of antifreeze and then run it thru the engine). I used to winterize my Universal diesel just before the boat was hauled each winter until I couldn't get there one year. That forced me to winterize on the hard and now I prefer it as it allows me to flush the engine cooling system (raw water side) with fresh water which I think is a good thing for the engine.

WHY?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but why do you need 10 gallons of water? You need to drain water out of your systems and replace some of the water with "pink" anti freeze!!!

Use the empty buckets to drain the water tanks and use that water to heat up the motor and change it over to the pink stuff. Viola. My small motor doesnt use very much water in the first place, so this was easy to do. Now we stay in the water all year( shouldnt that be one word?)allyear! The marina still turns off the water later in January. Ed thats a really cool picture! hahaha
