Skippers,

I am trying to get some ideas about the placement for a windlass on my 37.5 Hunter. Any suggestions and especially pictures would be greatly appreciated! I have read through the blogs and understand there is not an easy fix due to the Hunter's configuration but I was hoping there were some old salts out there with an answer.

Don:

Do you have any photos of your configuration? Our HV'36 has a platform in the anchor locker and there is not place for the anchor rode to drop down with a horizontal unit. I think that both Quick & Lewmar make units that have the forward portion of the windlass cut away.

Thanks for replying Steve
No sorry. There is no platform in the locker. The windlass will have to be a deck mount to get the required fall for the chain. The forward part of the locker has enough depth, I am guessing about 16 inches.

We added a Maxwell 800 to ours in 2004. Here are some of the things we had to have done:
1. Raise the roller furling above deck
2. Cut the anchor hatch in half and glass in the starboard side and made a hatch of the other half.
3. Drop the bottom of the anchor locker about 4".
4. Shorten the V-berth to where the stern portion of the anchor locker ends.
5. Added a battery locker under anchor locker.
6. Mounted the windless on the glassed in starboard side of the bow with foot controls
7. Changed the angle of the anchor roller to give a fail lead to windless.

The boat was just sold so I can't get any photos. I will search my computer to see if I have any pics and post if I find them.

Hi Don,
This summer we had a Quick windlass mounted inside the anchor locker of our Hunter 380. I think your locker is identical. The company makes an adjustment to the windlass (no charge) in order for there to be sufficient clearance beneath the anchor locker lid. Fiberglass work is needed in order to build out a larger platform/base, to match the template provided with the windlass. This will also require longer bolts than those originally provided with the windlass.
All seems to work well.

Regards,
Skjold

Thanks Skjold.
I am online now checking out the Quick windlass. Heading to the Toronto Boat Show soon and hoping to pick something up there. Maybe I will see you LoL! (Boat Show marks 1/2 point to spring launch!)
