Help!!! We are writing to anyone who may have sound advice to offer on finding and relpacement of our 1980 Catalina 22 Swing Type-Retractable Keel. We purchased our terrific boat two seasons ago and lost our keel while boat was tied to mooring during a bad storm on the Hudson River. #1 - Any ideas on where to find salvage/used keels? #2 - Ever dealt with this situation? Currently we have boat on trailer and are looking at manuals to use jack to raise keel under boat and it looks tricky. #3 - We've heard this has been a problem with these keels before any advice from experience? Thank you!!!

worst fear!

Thank goodness you were not out sailing! As a suggestion, would it be possible to recover the keel from the river? Either yourself or a professional diver could attach air balloons (type used for salvage) and haul it back to shore. You would not have to raise it all the way out of the water. Another possibility (slim) is to find an old Cat 22 and salvage its keel. And a third is to get a template of the keel and have a weld shop make one. Hopefully, someone else can offer a source for purchasing a keel directly. BTW, Catalina Direct sells a video on removing/replacing the keel.

Lost keel

Howdy; Years ago I removed the keel from my C-22 to fair and paint it and the trunk while the boat was on the trailer. I and a couple of friends used an automotive floor jack, wedged into the trailer and a piece of 4X4 wood to raise the boat, blocking it up with more blocks on the bunks. Start on one side, raise a little, move to the other side, raise a little, etc, until the boat is high enough. Most floor jacks have a removable pod at the business end. I did my own, but you could have a welder make up a pod with some verticle angle irons that will hold the keel upright as you remove it. Let the jack bear the weight and roll the keel out from under the boat. Reinstalling is the reverse. Go slow and be careful. Good luck. Larry W.

used keel

try looking at www.bentboat.com I just saw a used Catalina22 that was being parted - I concur with the previous response. It may be cheaper to retrieve the old one, than to transport a used one. ? ?

keel replacement

check with catalina- if they send the new keel on a truck with a new boat headed to your area, the shipping cost will not be too bad.

Graveyard

I have heard of a sailboat graveyard near Sandusky Ohio. I do not know if this is fact or fiction. Maybe someone in that area can verify. r.w.landau

keel

catalina direct sells a new keel for around $850.00 ( allmost what i paid for my 22 ). try to retrive your old one first contact a local scuba shop, they are allways looking for a way to make some dough for goofing around under water. get the catalina direct video on refinishing the keel. it showes how to make a keel cart to roll it under the boat,( and doing it on the trailer) john

The moral of the story. . .

. . . is that maintenance is required on swing keels. I might be wrong . . . Murphy's Law applies to boats as well as anything else . . . but I suspect it had been a long time since there had been any maintenance done on the hanging hardware on that twenty-year old boat. This is a constant argument on the C25 website. However you replace that keel, remember to do annual maintenance on it!

Lost Keel

I have the same problem...have a unique opportunity to save a 1985 Catalina 22 from a slow death, however, it has no keel and I need a trailer? What luck have you had with finding a keel for your 1980? Please advise if anyone can help with the keel or the trailer situation. I am open to any and all suggestions. Thank you
