After day sailing San Diego bay this past January (and wife visiting friends there this past week), we're considering a week charter (with kids) in March 2004. Can anyone help with reputable charter firms for a 34-38' boat? I'd rather not "join a club" since we'll only be there a short time. Also thinking of heading up the coast a short distance. Are there good overnight harbors in Del Mar, Encinitas, Carlsbad or Oceanside? Our friends have a camper they take to a state park in Oceanside. They thought there was a decent marina there. Any help from you guys in WARM sunny SoCal would be greatly appreciated.

San Diego Yacht Charters

San Diego Yacht Chaters has various size boats available. They are very easy to get along with. You can overnite the evening before and stay over on the last night of a charter. Check their website for more info. They are located on Harbor Island, across from the airport in Marina Cortez. Dwain

Seamist Skippers - Marina Del Rey

If you aren't set on San Diego and would like to head over to Catalina Island you might want to contact Seamist Skippers in Marina Del Rey.

Noting at Del Mar, Encitinas or Carlsbad. There

is a nice marina at Oceanside. Beach is close ect, and best of all they take reservations. You call them they tell you if they have a space, and as soon as they receive you check the slip is yours.

San Diego Area Anchorages

There are excellent docks for overnighting in Oceanside. Call the City of Oceanside Harbor Division for info.(Area Code 760) It will cost you about $22-$25 per night for a 38-40 foot boat. Ask for a slip near the Jolly Roger Restaurant. They will assign you a slip there, but what you actually want to do is to use the open public slip on the West side of the dock. That slip is generally open and you will not have to put your boat right next to some big power boat staying the night. The public employees seem to think that two (2) 14 foot beam boats can easily fit into a 30 foot wide double slip! You can also anchor in Mission Bay at a little cove off of the main channel into the Bay. Watch your depth at low tide since the charts are usually 1-2 feet off. Just stay toward the middle of the cove. There are other anchorages in San Diego Bay. Call the San Diego Harbor Police at (619) 686-6570 for more information. The charter company can probably help you with other input. Please remember that when sailing out of San Diego Bay going North or coming into SD Bay from the North, you need to stay well off shore, 1-2 miles to avoid the kelp beds which will literally stop your boat. So, allow for another hour or so in travel times. Have fun. We don't have many gunk holes around, but the weather in early January is usually very nice.

I'm not aware of any overnight charters you can take out without belonging to a charter club. However, if you're able to locate one, you should definately check out Paradise Point in Mission Bay! You can get a tie up there. You'll think you're in Hawaii!

Harbor Sailboats is the loction for great beneteau rental/charters. They keep their boats in great condition. Ask for the new 36.7. Tom and Leanne and Rebecca cam help you. There are no moorings or slips between San Diego and Oceanside, which is too bad for us locals. Enjoy the sali and tell teh people ay Harbor Sailboats I said hello. Sam Borgese

Good anchorages in San Diego area

... try Glorietta bay in Coronado Island, LaPlaya in Shelter Island and Mariner's cove in Mission Bay. None of these are long distance but they are in great locations, especially if you have a dink.

Harbor Sailboats

We were very happy with our charter with Harbor Sailboats a couple years ago. Very helpful people; reasonably priced; acceptable quality boat. If you need contact information, they regularly advertise in the classifieds in SAIL Magazine.

I second San Diego Yacht Charters

My family and I (6 total) chartered a Catalina 34 from SDYC a few years ago for 8 days. Staff was friendly and helpful. I recommend them. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

Oceanside Entrance

The harbor entrance at Oceanside can be difficult. There is frequently breaking surf right at the entrance. I would definately recommend making your approach during daylight! If you depart San Diego early enough, I would head straight for Dana Point, then on up to Newport and definately over to Catalina. If you are not set on departing from San Diego, I would also recommend Lido Sailing (Newport (might not rent to non members)), Marina Sailing (Newport and Long Beach), and Pacific Sailing (Long Beach - (they have 4 or 5 brand new Hunters at premium prices as well as a fleet of older boats at more affordable rates)).

Oceanside

Last time I sailed up to Oceanside, the city would not reserve a slip. First come. Kinda frustrating since theres not much else between Mission Bay & Dana Pt. I called them and offered to pay in advance, still said "no". Since its a city government owned facility theres no discussion or leeway. And yes C.Timmon is correct, the entrance to Oceanside can be difficult and dangerous during S-SW swell.
