i am currently looking at a "buccaneer" 18' unk model. The sailbag has "Bayliner Buccaneer" printed on the side. When inspecting the mast there is a bow in it, as if someone layed something heavy on it for a long time. went in the cuddy cabin, noticed a soft spot in the flooring. Floor was able to be peeled up. I was able to see the hull. The question is, is this a ridiculous endeavor,or are these problems that can be fixed with a little research and work. The owner is asking $1,000.00 with a shorelander trailer. All blunly honest comments are appreciated. Thank-you, Mike

Mike, I just purchased a 23 O'Day on Ebay for only $950 that was an really good shape with a 6hp sailmaster (no trailer though). There is a 17 DS on there right now with only 4 hours left and it is under $700 (many others too). Just seems like there is alot out there, so I would suggest looking around a bit. Good Luck!!

Used to have a Buccaneer...great little boat, built by the Bayliner power boat people. Sounds as if the boat has been sitting, maybe outside, for quite a while. $1,000 seems a bit much considering all the work you will have to do you make it seaworthy. Mine had a 2hp Evinrude, with trailer, new sails, set of four PFDs, recently waxed, in excellent condition...sold for $2,000 in 2000.

Sorry for the blunt opinion. Get something in better shape. Buc's are not know for their sailing ability.

Bucc-18 good boat but to much $$$$
I still own a Bucc-180/US-18 same boat. Thye are very good little daysailors,however: the things you describe wrong puts the boat in the $100-200 class in these parts and certainly is NOT worth more than $300. If you can find one of these in reasonble condition for around a $1000 get it, you won't be dissatisfied. Yes Bayliner makes CRAP, but the US-18/Bucc-180 is not. It isn't a racing dinghy it is a nice reasonbly responsive and stable little daysailor. ...and by the way my big boat is a cape dory and not some clorox bottle, so se I am a bit finicky about my boats<grin>

Mike, As a previous owner of one, I don't know what year Buccaneer 18 you are looking at, but the original version (pre-1980?) was poorly balanced. Had a real case of lee helm that made it hard to sail. They modified the design to correct this by moving the forestay back to the middle of the foredeck, added more leading edge to the centerboard (so now doesn't retract flush with the hull) and lengthened the boom. I would not buy the earlier model. All in all, there are many better sailing boats in this range.

Mike, you can definetly do alot better then that! Daysailors are great boats, and check out Flying Scots in your area. For a few bucks more, you can be sailing for years to come without spending anything.
