In your picture #7, the pin through the top of the boom should be through the grommet (reinforced hole) in the sail; the bolt rope on the foot (bottom) of the sail should be in the track on the boom. Your main halyard should be pulled tight to get the top of the mainsail higher to eliminate the wrinkles vertically.

The outhaul (photo 11) should be tighter to pull out the wrinkles along the boom (after putting the bolt rope in the track).

In picture 1, that pole inside the boom doesn't belong there, and if you want to use a pigtail off the backstay to support the boom when not sailing, it should be fastened to the backstay well above the boom so the the load on the backstay is more vertical (or more nearly parallel to the stay). At present, your attachment for the boom is pulling forward on the backstay, adding to your mast bending problem.

If you can adjust your rigging so that your mast is straighter, the above changes should get you a much better mainsail shape.

Good luck! -Paul

Making sense

Thanks for all the help and I am still working through these issues...

So, should the mast move much? I am concerned about having the mast too tight or too loose.

I wonder if the extension on my boom had something to do with a bimini top and clearance/management of the lines.

Mast should not move, that is what the stays are for.

I think the pole was an extension for a boom tent. (boom tent is a tarp draped over the boom and entended to the sides of the boat to protect the cockpit while the boat is at rest.

This is the end cap you should have, maybe it is laying around somewhere and you didn't know what it is.

You will need it to sail.

question

Refer to my pics 5,11,7,17.

On the mainsail, the rope part won't go in the boom, nor will the pin in the eyelet I have it pinned in an eyelet below it that is made onto the sail.
The sail has these things that look like tylenol pills and they are in the boom and prevent the rope from threading(too tight to go in).
Loosened the rigging and the bend is less pronounced. Sail still has more slack than I think it should.

Things are looking up!

The pill things are call slugs and they ARE what belong in the sail track(sorry).

Still need to raise the sail to the top sheave(pulley).

If that does not work I noticed a hole in the mast about 4-6 inches below the one that the boom mounting bolt is in. If you can't get the sail to smoth out, lower the boom mounting location to the lower hole. My 25 only has one hole.

It looks like the PO added pendents (lines that move the sails higher) maybe to be able to see under them. The gromets at the tack (front lower attachment of the sail) is what is usuall attached to the boat.

Hi Savyauto, Saw your pics. You have a Venture 25. Although similar the Venture is a little heavier than the Mac and top mold is different. I have had Freedom since 1976. I also used to be the dealer in these parts. If there is anything I can do in the way of advice let me know. I've noticed a few things that might need adjusting. When I have more time I will send you some suggestions if you don't mind. Check with bluewater yachts in Seattle @ 800-688-8626. They are Venture/Mac specialists and if they don't have it they can maybe steer you in the right direction. Where is Lay Lake? Fair Winds and Full Sails...

Tuning rigging

Any suggestions are welcomed. I am anxious to tune the rigging for the best sailing. I am in Alabama, near the lake- no too far from the Gulf.

Re: Tuning rigging

Hi Savyauto,
Congrats on your new aquisition! I too am a recent new/old Mac owner (bought last year, 1982 Mac 22), and am also in 'Bama. Still learning, so I've been keeping to wide spots on the Coosa until I can get the time to travel to larger waters, and do it with confidence. Soon to have to put it on hold for about a year, though, as I must attend to something overseas, but I will keep watching this board!
Good sailing!

You pay sales tax when you register the boat, I believe 2 to 3.5% depending on whether you live in a city or just a county. Then the only fees are registration based on the boats listed length. I don't know if they charge that fee based on age of the boat, or just the length. Our fees are very reasonable compared to what I hear others pay.

Thanks and sorry for the delay in answering. We haven't had Internet for a while. Yes you tax and fees are a lot less than what we pay in Utah,
