Harken MKII Unit 1 My furler line needs replacing and need help. It looks as though the furling spool must be split to do this. Anybody who's done this, I could use some advice. I've check the Harken site and archives here, but came up empty. Thanks

Would be surprised if it required any more ...

than just unwinding the old line and replacing it with new with a stopper knot at the end. I take my line off the harken for the winter and put it back for the summer. If you have the sail on you need to just tie it so it won't unfurl when you make the change. Vic

Perhaps...

I spoke too soon, but it sure looked as if the line entered the drum thru a hole the same diameter as the line, without a visible stopper knot, thus requiring disassembly. I hope you're correct Vic. I'll check closer next trip. Thanks

Definitely ...

Just unwind the old line and replace with new line and stopper knot, as mentioned by Vic. I have exactly the same furler and did mine last month. Maybe worth revisiting the Harken website, look for relevant owner's manuals downloads ... they were a big help to me.

smaller diameter line

Last year I replaced my furling line. There is a knot at the end and it goes through the bottom of the spool. While you are replacing the line consider a smaller diameter line. The new lines are stronger than the one you are replacing. Also, the smaller line takes up less room on the spool so there is less chance of fouling. good luck

Gary,

The responses are correct, ita an easy job. Just unwind the drum and pull the line through...I chose to cut my stopper knot end off as I was going to replace the line anyway. The real trick is threading the new line through the small hole. A smaller diameter line would be helpfull if you encounter that problem.
