Help needed please (last time I hope) with Simrad TP10 install

Hi all..

I think I may have goofed.

I installed my TP10 over the holidays and got a weather window this
morning to try it out.

Worked fine - up to a point..

I had followed the TP10 instructions and installed the unit so that at
mid-throw the tiller was amidships.

BUT!!

On my Vega (not sure if true of all) the rudder is amidships when the
tiller is well out to starboard.

So the useful tiller throw to starboard is significantly less than that
to port.

Meaning that auto-pilot compensating for weather helm on a starboard
close reach would not be possible in any wind.
And tacking from port to stbd tack with tiller pilot would not work either.

Have others made the same mistake (is it a mistake)?

Should I fit a bracket at right angles to the tiller with a new pin 6
inches (or as necessary) to port of the present pin position?

There is not much room to move the mounting cup further outboard - maybe
1-2 inches..

Thanks

I think your tiller has shifted on the shaft. My tiller lines up with the rudder.Or you may be experiencing excessive weather helm, were you on a starboard tack?

Hi - thanks for reply.

No - as far as I can see the actual deck mounting is asymmetrical.

I seem to remember this asymmetry being commented on elsewhere?

Maybe only Series 1 & 2 Vegas have this "feature".

On the other hand, if you are right then maybe I can re-jig the tiller
mount??

Hi John

I had teh same thing and it was because the tapered fixing pin in the rudder head had bent. I have now removed it and tightened the main bolt which has cured the problem.

Call me fi you need more explanantions.

Cheers

John,
Are you saying that when the rudder is lined up fore and aft, the
tiller is over to one side? This certainly needs to be fixed!
Two possibilities:
1/. As Steve says, the tapered pin in the rudder head fitting is
either sheared off or bent, allowing the rudder head to have turned
on the shaft. That's a pretty easy fix, just need a new pin and
tighten the whole works up.

2/. The rudder shaft has broken loose inside the rudder allowing the
rudder to twist out of alignment. Maybe not broken all the way loose,
but at least bent out of alignment. Not such an easy fix as the first
choice ... I understand this has happened to other Vegas, but is
quite repairable, just a bigger job.

Either way, it's a good thing to discover before you get out there
where a complete failure could be awkward!

Keep us posted as to what you find.
Thanks.

Hello Peter,
thanks to you, Steve Birch and Mike Freeman for setting me straight
(pun intended) on this one.

In my innocence I had thought that the tiller being out of line with the
rudder was another quirky Vega "feature"!

I look forward to resetting the tiller at the weekend..

(Little by little I am figuring this boat out...)
