Help! missing boat on Lake Erie

My friend needs help locating his boat which is adrift somewhere in eastern Lake Erie. The boat is a blue/grey C&C 115 with a white deck by the name of Blue Dog out of Rocky River Ohio. The boat was being delivered back to Rocky River on the evening (10pm) of the 11th after the Falcon Cup. The 2 crew delivering the boat ran into trouble about 2 miles off Mentor Ohio and were rescued by the Coast Guard. The CG did not secure the boat and allowed it drift. The wind and waves on Saturday evening were 15-25 out of the southwest with 6 foot waves. No sails were up. The wind on Sunday switched in the morning to about 290 degrees and then to 260 degrees. It subsided around 4:00pm. The boat is thought to have drifted towards Erie Pa at 2-3 knots. The CG did a search on Sunday with no success. If anyone in Erie or Dunkirk has seen it call the CG or pm me and I will put you in touch with the owner.

The owner could probably find a pilot and small plane for rent at a small local airport. The type that give rides. Hire it and ride along for an aerial search.

That's fine if it's out in the lake "floating loose"...

But more probable it has already been found, pulled to shore and secured...

A little harder to spot from the air...

It may be up on a beach somewhere - hopefully not a rocky one.

Time to get the charts and weather reports out and study. The odds are that the boats is safe. In the saturday wind the boat would have moved NE in 15kt winds on sunday it would have moved to ENE in light winds. There should be a rather narrow fan shape area to search. I presume that there are minimal currents on the lake.

Looking at the charts for that section of the coast I bet the boat is in open water. The SW winds of the night would have pushed it NE and the coast runs E by Ne.

I would suspect Lake Erie has curents as the lake dumps into Niagara Falls at its east end.

if the USCG had to leave the boat, wouldn't they have alerted someone (eg towing/salvage) to come pick it up? or anchored it? I can't imagine the CG intentionally creating a hazard to navigation.

On the chesapeake bay we have to be concerned with tidal currents of one to two knots and in some cases much more. There is one cove that we enjoy as an anchorage that we have to approach with substantial compensation for the current or we will miss it.

Glad to hear that the outcome is apparently good. Amazing how we see, time and again, that the boat can take more than the crew.

Pictures, status, or BS? Why was this abandoned? Was that a professional delivery crew or just a bunch of sissies?
