help me put up my mast/sails!!! newb questions!

getting ready to finish up the paint and i need some help getting the mast put up before i hit the water.

I want to do a dry run with the boat in the back yard so if i find i'm missing anything i can order it from the convience of the house instead of the lake


Here are some pics of the boom and mast. looks like a 1/4" groove for the boom and a 3/16" groove for the mast.

I'm going to need some slugs

i'm also going to need shackles to secure the slugs to the sail

questoin #1 how many slugs/shackels do i need for a 21ft sail?

#2 do i also use slugs along the boom?

#3 are the measurements of the slugs taken at the thin opening of the mast/boom or the larger outer edge that goes inside the mast/boom?

#4 i've included pics of each end of the boom as well as where i think the boom should mount to the mast, can someone tell me what hardware i'm miissing to attach the two and where i can get whatever i'm missing

the boat is an old westwind 21, sail is from an old venture 21. They seem to be extremely similar boats.

Congratulations on getting your boat ready. First, I would suggest that you contact someone in your local area who knows about rigging. Find a local sailing club and put a note on the bulletin board saying that you are new and you have some questions. Get to know some of the folks and you will learn a lot.

I do not know where your lake is but I am sure that it is a bit of a way from the coast of Maine so I do not know how much that I can help you.

You did not include pictures of your sail so I am flying a littel blind but...

There are a few ways that sails are secured to spars. In the old days (wooden spars), wooden rings were made which encircled the mast and were secured to the luff of the sail. With the advent of extruded aluminium spars with grooves in them, we went to track cars ( small nylon plugs with stainless eyes) that are sewn to the luff and the foot of the sail. Also sometimes on small boats the boltrope (the reinforcing line that is sewn to the luff and the foot of the sail) is fed directly into the mast and boom grooves.

I could not say how your should be set up without seeing it so, again, find someone locally to check it out.

it has a bolt rope. I just figured slugs would make it easier to raise up/down but if slugs are not needed that frees up cash to go into other goodys.

Don't fix what ain't broke. Just get a can of McLube SailKote, it's a dry, silicon lubricant that will make sliding the bolt rope much easier.
