Hello, In advance, thank you to give some ideas about installing a jauge on the fresh water tank. ( made in aluminium ) Hunter 33 is a fantastic boat, not only a blue water one. Bests regards. Alain

H33 Gauge

Sam Lust has reported in this forum that he installed a screw out port with clear face in the top of the tank that sufficed just fine in determining the water level, just by peering down into the tank. He pointed out that there is a transverse baffle in the tank just where you want to cut out.

Snake River?

Most gauge systems like Snake River require a modification to work on a metal tank. It involves adding a PVC tube to the outside of the tank, not an easy thing to do. But you could check their website or write to: Snake River Electronics Dennis@snake-river.org My 1979 H37C water tanks have the same float gauge as the diesel tank. The diesel gauge works fine but the water gauges have long since corroded. I have not found replacement float gauges. These are only good if you do not mind lifting a settee cushion and a locker cover to look at the dial.

Not true of Snake River gauges, Ed

Snake River has internal senders for use in metal tanks. Sender still doesn't come in contact with the contents, though...it's encased in a PVC tube. Check their website at http://www.snake-river.org.

Metal Tanks

Ed: Per Peggie's letter our PVC tube goes into the top of the tank. The tube is sealed so the waste inside the tank does not effect the readings. If you need more info go to our webpage www.snake-river.org or write to me. snake.river@gte.net The address in Ed's mail is no longer any good. Use above address to get hold of me. Thanks for clarifying.

I did not think it had been that long since I had inquired. I should have checked the website. I'll go there now. :)

I installed one last year and it works fine

I just used an off-the-shelf float arm assembly and guage sold as a fuel guage. I cut the required dimension hole in the top of the tank, played with the float arm so that I installed it in the right direction so the baffle didn't interfere with the movement of the arm, drilled and tapped the bolt holes and it was done. The only "modification" I have to do was tape a lable under the guage that said "water". 'Cause the guage comes marked as 'fuel'. Works fine.
