Hi Guys, I need a little help installing a thru-hull paddle wheel sensor for my SR Instruments knots meter. I ordered a replacement sensor from the factory, but neither the mount or the sensor came with instructions. It looks like it's self-explanatory, but I do have a question. On the mount and on the sensor there is a notch where the sensor must slide in one direction only. Does the notch point towards the bow or the stern? I did leave a message with tech support at the factory, but 'll probubly get quicker and better advice here. Thanks, Bill

It shouldn't make a difference

The paddle wheel creates a pulse which it will do in either direction. I think the notch is for alignment. Joe S

Joe is correct it won't make any difference.

Just make sure that the paddle wheel is full on towards the bow.

Always double check

Put the sensor in the thru-hull and make sure the notch is either "along the flow of water or perpendicular to it" You want to put the sensor as far forward in the hull as possable and not have it come out of the water on a big wave. Along the centerline is best and forward of the keel is desired. Keeping the sensor out of the turbulance in the aft of the hull is important to getting a good sensor output.

Notch Forward

I had an SR Mariner knotmeter some years ago and as I recall the blades of the paddlewheel were curved. With the notch situated forward the blades also curved forward so as to create a "scoop" to catch the water flow.
