Need a little help! My 99' Hunter 340 has a rather large window leak in the long port side window. According to Hunter it's glued in with Dow 795 Adhesive Silicone from the factory. The window is out and all the silicone adhesive has been cleaned with the exception of a thin film on the sealing surfaces. Is there a cleaner out there that will clean the film off and is compatable with the plexiglass Hunter used? Also there are 7 holes (filled with sealer) around the edge of the window. It looks like they used small screws to hold it in place then removed and filled them after curing. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks in advance for any replies, Jim

'Fraid I Can't Offer Much Help Here ..................................

......... but I find myself in the same situation with a slow leak in the front window. Could you please explain how you were able to remove the window considering it has a bedding surface of about 2" all around ? Best regards, s/v Island Hunter

This may be the best place to start.

I guess I have to add a message here so it seems like the people at Dow Corning will know most about this stuff. ;)

Give this stuff a try, and please report back.

I don't know how it works. But one thing is sure, any film of old silicone will prevent the new stuff from sticking. http://www.amtexchemical.com/pages/1/page1.html?refresh=1067351487284

Not sure about the plexiglass

I kind of doubt it will work on the plexiglass, but the best thing I have found for cutting that silicone film is acetone. If it won't eat the plexi you would be home free. Might give it a try on a very small area, such as a corner. It will certainly get it off the fiberglass.

Window Leak Repair

Thanks for the replys. Any solvent based cleaner will damage the plexiglass. I'll call Dow Corning, I'm sure they have a help desk! To Island Hunter. The bedding is about 1/2" or so wide. I used a snap knife and just cut it around. It cuts relatively easy and took about a half hour to get out. The other material you see looks like butyl and does not stick very well to the window. My guess is it's used as a load bearing surface for the window and to space out the bedding. Cut where the bedding meets the butyl (butyl is shiny, the bedding is dull). Scrape off the bedding (be careful) and clean the fiberglass surface. You can use water and a scrunge. Buff it with 80 grit sandpaper and a final wipe with acetone on a clean rag. You do not want any oil or wax on the surface when you rebed. Hope this helps!
