I own a 79 Hunter 27 with 2 friends. We have been updating her since we purchased the boat in January 2000. She had not been used for ten years and was in very poor cosmetic condition. She also had taken on water up to the berth cushions. We urgently need to replace the hatches (one recently cracked) and the ports which are very brittle. Does any owners know of any places we can buy the original Gray`s ports and hatches. ( or the equivelent) at reasonable prices. There was a retailer on the internet (Thrifty Mariner) which appears to have gone out of business. Thanks Alan Jackson

My Thoughts

Here is my wish list. I really haven't decided on the rectangular hatch. These are available from Pompanette in Florida (now owns Grey). I understand that through some of the internet suppliers, they may discount the list price from Pompanette. Good luck. Also note that there is a series of pictures in the archives on the instalation of the trapazoidal hatch. 1 Hatch Bomar N2092-10A 21x19x18 1 Hatch Bomar 1029-10A 12x17 927-1111 12x17 4 Portlight Grey 512AD28 5x12 4 Portlight Grey 715AD27 7x15

Chuck has it right

Alan Chuck's part numbers are correct. There isn't an exact replacement that I was able to find for trapezoidal, so we went with the Bomar aluminum frame. That required a small bit of jigsaw work on the original hole, but it wasn't much at all. Just plan on three partial days to do the job, 'cause you'll want to cut the hole and patch the cut (I used Marine Tex) and let that dry. Then come back the next day and fit the new hatch, drilling holes for screws etc. Then put a big glob of caulking on there and screw it down lightly and let that stand for a day. Finally, go back and screw the hatch down tightly onto the now-flexible but solid caulking. That should seal it perfectly. I didn't do that and squashed all the caulking out of one area and had to redo. Good luck. Ron

I made one that is pretty nice

I couldn't see spending the bucks on another solar degradeable trapezoid hatch on mine and replaced it with 1/2" plexiglass, stainless adjusters and hinges, etc. I think I'm in for about 100 bucks, and when the plexiglass gets ragged looking I'll just use it as a template to make another one and reuse the stainless. The hatches on my 82 - h27 are on a molded-in rise. Been on for a month of our wet time here, and I'm very happy.....although I'm surfing the net for a good seal material. Right now I have a bead of 3M goop that I let dry before closing it the first time. Appreciate the info on the ports though! They are way too complex to fabricate! IJ

Repair?

Allen, I am completely restoring a 1977 Hunter 27',and it is work. I had my forward hatch repaired here at home by one of the best fiberglass men in the country and it looks brand new and only cost $75.00. I say here at home ,I keep my boat in Bath,NC but live in Washington .I now have the boat in my back yard and am able to work on it all winter.Wish you fellows the best on your project and if I can be of any help ,just ask .
