Need help in identifying the two aluminum (what I call brackets) on the mast, that when removed allow the main sail to be threaded as well as the boom? I have Catalina Direct notebook but have not been able to figure out the correct name of the part. Thanks for your help.

Mast gates

I think what you are referring to are mast gates. they keep the sail lugs from coming out of the mast when the main is lowered. If you remove them, you can take the mainsail off and remove the mast. Check the link - I think they have a picture oof them.

Mast Gates?

Do these brackets cover the slot on the mast so the mainsail falls all the way to the boom when lowered? If so, I don't know if they have an official name, but at the C25/250 National Association website they are referred to as "Mast Gates". You won't find these devices anywhere because they are usually owner fabricated although there is a guy who makes them for the C25. Go to the related link below to see a recent discussion on these devices.

Who made the spar?

The spar manufacturer ought to have replacements. I doubt that Catalina Direct would have them. As one responder has said, you can also fabricate your own locally. My C320 mast was made by Charleston Spars & has a similar mast gate fastened with two knurled knob screws. The metal mast gate has a slight curve that follows the mast curvature, and a small 90 deg inward lip where it joins the track for the sail slugs. Experience suggests this arrangement, while cheap & simple, isn't very good. The adjustment of the mast gate is very sensitive if you want to get smooth movement of the slugs when hoisting the main. And, those screws tend to work loose over time. Anyone come up with a better solution? --Ron s/v Lady Jane

Page binders

I use plastic paper page binders. The things you slid on the side of like a report. This works well on my 22 becouse they come on and off easly. What I did was to cut them to fit the slot so they won't slide up and down the mast. They clip on to the mast. I also glue a peace of plastic on the inside of the binder clip a little longer than the slot on the top and bottom so its flush on the inside of the mast. It takes about 15 min. to make and about a buck fifty. One binder will do both sides. I keep a few on hand just in case one would pop out. That has'nt happen yet. Hope this helps. Round Cleats

I think you are looking for round cleats. I throw at least 1 over the side every year. You can replace them at west marine for about $5.
