Storm Damage

Don't know where you could get aerials. Just went through a bunch of pics from that area on Yahoo, and looks like an awfully lot, if not most of the boats there are totaled. Clear Lake really got hammered. For those who aren't aware, Clear Lake is the second largest sailboat community in the US. If anyone hears from anyone in the area please post it up here. I haven't heard anything from people in that area. There are some members on this board who live there, including TonyB. As most of you know, he lost his boat in Katrina, and it isn't looking good for him again. Just can't find out anything.

So good to hear

Tony, so good to hear that your boat and others made it through this. You certainly didn't deserve to loose another boat.

Ike Remnants

So, up here in western NY, on lake Ontario, we are getting out own Ike leftovers. It is strange to be so far from any ocean, yet get hit with a tropical storm (depression now?) However, the great lakes are still warm and Ike is expected to pick up a little steam while it's here. Have been watching my barometer fall all day - down to 28.6 inches and still falling! Winds are up to about 20 knots sustained. It will be an interesting night but surely not what those of you in the south suffered!

Does anyone know where we can get photos of pleasure island tx. we want to see if our boat made it through the storm. we aren't able to get to the island yet.

YouTube has a video and KFDM has aerial photos of the area. I have several photos. Alfred went home for one day to check on our house and the marina. We will be going home on either this Saturday or this Sunday. The marina is totaled. The boats were prevented from landing in the canal by the seawall. They look like an empty can of sardines. Only a few didn't end up in the pileup. It's heartbreaking to look at. Before Ike was even headed for Galveston there was already 2 1/2 feet of water on the parking lot by the fishing jetty. We knew then that the marina was in trouble if the hurricane shifted course.

I joined this site so I could offer the photos. Alfred lost Intrepid to hurricane Rita. That was his deceased wife's boat. Dolphin is surely totaled from this hurricane. We will be moving to the Tyler area where Dolphin could not be moved to because he is too big for these lakes. I don't know if we will replace him with a smaller boat or not.

Both boats were used for racing. Now Alfred is into triathlons. I can not help crew due to spinal stenosis.

This is YouTube's aerial video of Pleasure Island which includes the marina.

On this map you can click on the squares near the coast in the Beaumont area. Then there will be yellow squares. Keep searching until you find the marina. That's how I found the aerial photo. I did a screen capture, opened my photo editing program and clicked on paste and then saved the image as a jpg file.

I had to join so I could post these web addresses too.

I hope this helps.

I have been to the club and it does look bad. I would like to add that our boat did make it ok, when I got to the club I could not believe what I saw our boat Deena Ann was still in her slip. I am sorry to here about yall's boat.... I hope that things work out for the best. Good luck in Tyler

Thanks again for joining this site just to pass the information, I would recomend that you add it to your Favorites because there are allot of nice and very informitive foks here. I visit this almost every day and it so nice to see so many people that are willing to help you out on just about anything.

Thanks Mike G

Thanks, Mike. I am glad your boat survived. I cried when Russ told me about Dolphin. Such a beautiful boat but mixed emotions because of the history behind the boat (previous deceased wife).
Alfred had received an email and I called Russ and Pat. Pat's mailbox was full but Russ returned my call. Dolphin had too many holes to be put back in the water. Dolphin was moved closer to the club house.
We have two weeks from the date Dolphin was moved to get Dolphin out of the marina. All boats that remain on land after those two weeks will be bulldozed. I am glad that I checked Alfred's email so I could call him. He had already started a claim with the insurance company. We'll have to get a smaller boat when we move if he decides to replace Dolphin. That makes for two boats lost in three years. He lost Intrepid to Rita in 2005 the year we got back together. Now Dolphin to Ike.
Alfred is in Temple today, Friday, defending his Triathlon title. Saturday we should be headed for home. Groceries are still scarce back home. Alfred and I were childhood playmates and high school sweethearts who got back together after I moved back from Hawaii.
I have plenty of pictures of the boats for sharing. Just send me an email. Or I can upload to a webpage for the asking. I have a website.

I will most likely be at the yatch club this weeken to help, so I will not be around a computer to reply back untill Monday. I will look for Dolphin this weekend while I am out there. If I hear anything else new I will let you know. If there is anything I can do for yall, let me know. You can send the pictures of the boat to mike.gill@total.com

Dolphin at Port Arthur Marina 09/28/2008

I will be posting photos (not just of our boat) taken at the marina in my website. http://moonlightflower.org so be watcihing for that. We went to the marina on Saturday night before we came home and then after church on Sunday. Some of the night pictures didn't turn out so well but when I made them a negative they came out like a ghost picture. So I will use those as ghost pictures. Just give me a little time.

It was learned that one boat did cross the canal and landed on some rocks. I didn't get a picture of that but hopefully I can. It is rumored that some people have not found their boats yet and it is possible that those boats may have ended up in the canal.

Of the boats that got moved because they could not be put back in the water, the owners have only a few days now to remove them from the marina because what boats are left will be bulldozed. Of those that were put back in the water, there was a fee for that. Our insurance agent called only minutes after we left the marina last night. So he is forewarned again.

The major damages to Dolphin can not be seen from the road. What you see from the road is the port side. The major damages are on the starboard side and on the inside. In the photo of Dolphin with my van, of course you are looking at the port side. A friend had asked why we couldn't haul Dolphin with my van. I laughed. She said oh it would take an 18 wheeler. Yep...

The marina is a sad sight folks. It really breaks my heart to see such a mess. Ike was no General and he was no Admiral either.

The last time Alfred and I went to check on Dolphin we met a team who own a business and have trucks to haul the damaged boats. (They can haul up to a 45 footer.) They are out of Massachusetts. Yogi is the gal's name. She spoke with our insurance adjuster. Anyway, she said she is a scuba diver and they plan to dive in the canal looking for boats they may have ended up there. I told her what my tugboat grandfather said about the currents. (They will have safety lines to the boat.) Alfred took my camera with him this morning in case they have found any sunken boats. If they find any and we are fortunate to be there to take pictures (unless that happens today) I will be posting them in my website too. We never saw the boat that landed on the rocks across the canal. Bummer. But the port side of Dolphin was banged up badly by some palettes somebody had dumped out at the marina. That's how many of the boats got so badly damaged, not just by the storm surge etc. The port side was mushy is why Dolphin was placed on the starboard side where the long hole is. One of our yacht members made a comment about a possible law suit against the people who dumped the palettes!?!?!?!?!?
