I will refer to two teak pieces on the slide lexan hatch. There is the obvious one that you will pull the hatch open or close. The next one which is harder to get to keeps the slider hatch from coming out all the way. To access the one from beneath, you will need to take the screws out on one side of the fiberglass hatch and then the lexan can come out. Remember the long screws are for the stainless steel rods that hold the hatch up. Have a friend wit h you when you remove the slider hatch or you may drop it like I did once and in my case, I broke a couple of toes which was not smart. You will need to run a heavy bead of silicon from one end of each teak piece and let it ooze out when you put the screws on and caulk the screws too. Do this on both and clean with alcohol as it will not hurt the lexan. This will solve your leak problem. Crazy Dave Condon

Manufacturer Responsibility

I find it amazing that rather than Hunter installing these two teak pieces properly, they continue to send out boats with leaky hatches. "Hi. Welcome to your new boat. Better go buy some silicon and seal these two teak pieces or the hatch of your boat will leak like a sieve." Amazing...

Excuse me Jeff

Overall, Hunter Marine builds good boats. As things move, I have seen some leaks occur which are not that hard to reseal but unfortuantely that does happen on some boats. I have found many of the employees are dedicated in their work and sometimes things get by which they have felt bad. They work very hard and I bet they work harder than you for less pay. Heck, I have had a few rascals call and or email me telling me they wish I would not be on the forum. Well, I am because most folks appreicate the information I give which is based on experience. I do not say or who I am out of respect for the forum but I felt Hunter deserves better and I will stand up for them anyday. Crazy Dave Condon

With you on that Dave

Yep there is no doubt with the volume of yachts that Hunter build there will always be a few hassles but none that we can not solve on this forum. Already a few ideas suggested here have been adopted by Hunter. The quality is great. And I guess most of us do not mind tinkering with this and that. Its part of the fun of owning a yacht even though some of us including myself let of a bit of steam every so often it is all part of the journey.

Ah Ha

Thanks Tom for your link. I see it is a 3M product so I should be able to find it around here somewhere. I have been using Sicaflex for other applications incuding fixing in new windows on one of my other yachts but I am not sure if they have a product the same as what you have suggested?? Thanks everyone for your response. Yet again it is typical of the worth of this forum. "Fantastic"

Excuseeeee Meeee, Dave

I agree with what you are saying about Hunter making great vessels. I think what Jeff is saying that somewhere in the years of putting out these H26 and 260's someone would say "hey we have a problem with our hatch configuration" or "Hey, we have a problem with the rudder riding up", or" Hey, lets make it easier to pull the rudder up". It has nothing to do with the guy in production working hard for minimum pay. I've been to the factory and I see how hard they work. These problems all sound like a design issues. Through this forum we have come up with ingenious ways to circumvent these little problems.Mark is right about enjoying tinkering with some of the little problems that occur in our boats. But we have a 95 H26 and the same hatch problem, the same rudder problems are occuring 8 years later.Don't get me wrong we love our Hunter. Putting a shear pin in a rudder on a new $32,000 boat so it doesn't float up. Come on now. Paul H S/V Linda Belle 95 H26

Mr. Paul

You are correct that this forum is designed for question and answer and if there are problems, they are looked at and addressed. That is what this forum is all about. I think Jeff,s comments about Hunter went beyond that and this has no place on the forum. By the way, I do not get paid for being on this forum and the only reason I am here is to give imput on boats that I know but when someone wants comparison to other brands, I do bash them but point out the differences only. Mark, Here is a possible fix for you and others

Before I moved up from my H260, I had the same leak. Got pissed and did a little re-engineering. I removed the entire sliding hatch - twice trying to fix this and finally - Removed the teak stringer all together. In the picture you can see I placed two or three rubber bumpers instead of stringer, which kept the hatch from coming all the way out. Then laid down a silcone bead that looked like the Hoover Dam, notice I angled on sides so water would run out towards the bow. This Worked. A least I've not heard from the new owner complaining!! But then again I used the companionway cover almost all the time. Jim S/V Java

Inspection

After all the discussion, I took mine apart to see what everyone was talking about. Mine was just starting to come apart and the end screws stripped out because there wasn't enough wood to hold them. I resealed and put through bolts in the end where the screws and stripped out. The other thing I noticed was the plastic rails are just screwed through very thin fiberglass and strip easily. I was able to through-bolt one fastener, but the others are inaccessable so I filled the holes for a little more support. It's incredible they didn't at least put some wood backing in there for something to fasten to. Jeff Peltier

Thanks Jim and Jeff

Hey Jim that looks like it would sure do the job. I will get a carton of Fosters this weekend drink the lot and get into it! Jim I thought I would like to keep the teak crossmember for I figure it may add to the strength of the plexi glass should someone stand on it. Any way I will refix with lots of silicon but am thinking I might add some hight to the rubber stoppers on each side of the lifting hatch to raise it up as much as I can and then I thought I might even get another peice of timber, perhaps jarrah, and make it a little higher than the original teak bit particulary on each end so that the water will not pool in the middle and then spill out at the ends?? If you get my drift?

Hey Mark about that cross member

The cross memeber was dragging on the poptop which made it difficult to slide. That was one of the reasons I remove it. Jim
