I am trying to paint my fiberglass boat with Perfection (from Interlux) my hull (topside). I selected Flag Blue. I have also bought the primer and all the solvents. I just started the first step which is sanding with 220 and now I am getting ready to apply the primer. The only thing that I am REALLY concerned is... Should I go by roll and tip off or maybe I should go by spraying. I am better than average with painting but have little experience with spraying. SO... You can probably understand my position. A lot of times the factory will say one thing and when the average Joe does it, is a lot different. Did anyone go with the tip off way and had any good results? Anything that I should be aware... I watched the movies at Interlux (Perfection application) and it does not look very difficult. I am concerned about the surface being glossy enough and obviously with no streaks. Thank you so much. DAniel, I am a pretty fair tugboat captain but far from calling myself a painter. Wife and I have painted 2 hulls with brite-side paint from interlux and gotten very good results. Its not quite as glossy as gelcoat but from abt 10 feet it looks great. Adding a little, " and i mean a little thinner", we rolled and tipped the entire hull and have hardly any brush strokes that you can see . My first attempt was with a foam roller and it left WAY to many bubbles and didnt get enough paint on the surface for my satisfaction. I just bought anothe rcomputer but i have photo's that i can e-mail you of the 2nd boat we painted with brite-sides paint. ": 1979 hunter 30 ". Sounds like i work for interlix maybe but i have used it twice and gotten good results each time. The key is surface preporation. happy sailing: Charles Creel

..on my last boat , a Coronado 25 , I started painting the topside but never finished it as my Lancer came along and I sold the Coronado.However, in the course of painting the Companionway Hatch and the other hatches I had good results with the InterLux Brightside single part polyeurathane.I've not had a try with the Perfection paint yet..but the Tip & Roll method worked good for me with the Brightside paint..finish was stroke free and mirror like.You should try a small section like a hatch or somesuch and work from there..practice on the first coat so when you do the final finish its smooth and clear. Mark Corke stresses that spraying a two-part is NOT for the amateur. There are toxicity concerns as well as environmental. You need a Tyvek suit and a forced air respirator. A yard local to me just did an Imron job and they built a frame and plastic sheet enclosure around the whole boat to contain spray dust and cyanamides as well as to control dust that would ruin the job. Be very careful...

Will try Some coats
Thanks everybody for your thoughts. I have finished with the epoxy filler today, hopefully will prime later on the day. I was thinking of giving it couple of coats by roll and tip and see where I stand. I bought some foam rollers (1/8 nap) and want to see what they do also have a good china bristle brush (paid almost 18 for a good one). If it does not work to satisfaction I was thinking of asking a friend of mine that has a cabinet shop (20 yrs in business) that regularly sprays urethanes and see if we can do anything. The only thing with that is that the paint (at least A component) looks very thick. I do not know if it will get thiner after I put B they say not to put more than 10% thinner also. I am afraid it will clog the spray gun. I am taking it slowly so any advice is appreciated. Thanks a lot. Daniel

And get great results. There are a lot of good opinions on this board but there are also some that are misleading. People will fail with something and immediately blame the product when it was usually just a case of not following directions properly or doing the leg work required. on the trailer - we had just launched at the ramp and had to take the boat over to the crane to set the mast! Sure looks naked doesn't it?
