Well - more parts on this project boat to replace. Need to replace the ignition switch and maybe the whole control panel in the cockpit - seems to be falling apart, water penetration through dried out gaskets, and mostly the ignition switch - when it get wets outside, even though the key is not inserted, the pwer light goes on slightly and the alarm chirps all night ! Current solutions are disconnect the alarm, and later the battery drains, or disconnect the power line to the ignition switch - ouch ! Anyone have a suggestion on the best way to find the right keyed ignition switch or perhaps the full panel ? All this snow in the north east did my boat in !

most of the Yanmar parts are readily available...either distributors or the auction sites...

The hard part will be to find what "rev" level or part number you have or are looking for. Start with an illustrated parts breakdown, get your assembly or part numbers and good to go.

I got three key switches last year on one of the sites, new old stock for less than $10, kept one for my needs and sold the other two for over what I paid.

I keep a notebook with filter/spares/parts I need or use regularly so I know at a glance whether something will work or not.

Jim: The blank panels are fairly inexpensive. Getting a new panel w/gauges is expensive. If you can just order your new blank panel and the key, that is where I would start. You can call Mack Boring and they should be able to give you advise and fill your needs too.

Like steve says the control panels without gauges are inexpensive. Yanmar has two models, one with an opening for a Tachometer and the other without it. It is simple to switch your gauges to a new panel. Regarding the switch I don't think the problem you describe is switch related. Before you go out and purchase a new switch check the wiring harness going from the engine comparment to the control panel. This harness is routed with sharp bends through fiberglass edges and with time and hull flexing they can chaffe right through the wiring insulation causing at first intermitent shorts. A visual inspection should point to places where the insulation is wearing off. If everything checks out and you want to replace the switch you can find at West Marine just asking for a two position ignition switch. Walmart used to carry them but I do not know if they still do.

Many thanks all ! Took care of the problem with a generic key switch from West Marine, but still have lots more to do - - that harness is indeed pretty tight - does anyone have a wiring diagram ?
