I am looking for a fixture/pole or whatever to hold one of my dockline up about five feet from the dock so that one of my crew can grab it and connect to my forward cleat when docking. This is easier than hopping off the boat especially when I have older or less athletic types aboard. I have seen these fiberglass poles for sale but they are expensive. ($200 or so) I am looking for cheaper or do it yourself alternative. Thanks.

Plumbing pipe

I have seen several "line holders" at our docks made of pumbing pipe- the plastic type. 1.5 dia seems the most common and you can design the hook part to your own liking.

Painting pole

Go to Home Depot and get one of those painting poles(you know the ones that screw on to a roller) that telescope out for easy storage. Plus they have a screw fitting on the end that you could put your hook or whatever onto.

line holders

I used to have four of them, made from PVC with a galvie hook attached to the end. I mounted them in galvie flag pole holders that I screwed to the dock. It was great; no one had to make the leap to the dock and I could bring the boat in single-handed very easily, but when the city reconfigged the marina, they wouldn't allow anything to be attached to the dock. I'm thinking of making new ones and setting them in small buckets of Quik-Crete.

They have 2 items--The line Caddy and the Line Holder. Is this what you're looking for?

Older, Less Athletic, but Wiser

Try the wire fixtures made to hang plants, solar lights, bird feeders, etc. It is always up to invention to make tasks easier and more enjoyable. Wiser and older sailors can make something work better at less cost and energy expense. That is the experience of sailing! When docking watch the pros. The tricks are systems driven and require direction of crew duties. . . crew being one or many. . . regardless of age or athletic ability. Bend the fixtures to within reach over the bow and stern of boat. Thank you for taking older, less athletic crew members on board your ship. And caring to bring them safely back to port. Bike Pole

How 'bout one of those orange fiberglass poles that you see on bicycles with the orange safety flag at the upper end. Much cheaper than some of the fancier stuff you see for sale.... Happy Sailing...
