I have a 2gmf yanmar, It runs great, no smoke, no knocking, untill I run it wide open, it starts knocking and wont shut of easly, even when I pull the fuel stop, it is trying to "Run Off". The head gasket has just beeen replaced, After being blown.I think the head gasket is good because again it does not smoke at all from idle to just before wide open.Can this be the governor hung up? :Update: The motor had too much oil in it and thats what the motor tried to run on. I am told to keep the oil level BELOW the top mark.

Too much oil in the crankcase can cause some
oil burning as this oil is carried past the rings and into the combustion chamber. Usually it leaks out or is blown past gaskets until it reaches a normal level. I have never heard of too much crankcase oil causing a engine to run on. Bad injectors, fuel pressures etc can cause some of this to occure. If this has just started since the head gasket replacement I would start looking toward something done at this time. Ray

Had the same situation on a 2qm15 yanmar one day, scared the s out of me.I shut the engine by placing a board across the air intake and figured it was an overfilled oil reserve.

Mark: Now you know. Once a diesel start combusting it does not give a damn what it is burning. This can also happen if you are sailing with the motor running and the boat is healing too much. This subject was just discussed in the last week or so. My friend w/a Hunter/30 YSM12(?) has had this happen more than once!

Mark . . .watch your oil to make sure it stays up !
A few years back, I had a Chevy that had a problem. The garage failed to drain the old oil out before they added new oil. I took it out on the highway before I realized that. Needless to say, James Bond had nothing on me as major black smoke eliminated all those that followed. Problem was that it violated the piston rings resulting in an engine that burned oil thereafter. Not so much of a problem in deisels, but you may want to monitor your oil level daily for a while to make sure that you aren't continuing to burn crankcase oil. We would appreciate a later observation from you if you would care to share such with us. Keep in mind that my situation was a major violation of the oil rings . . . and was a few years back.

I suppose it depends on how much is too much.
DJR: I would think that if there was just a little too much, it is cause additional crankcase pressure and the engine probably has enough extra strength to handle that. If there was an extra quart in there that may be a different story. Hopefully Mark will get back to us on this point and let us know if everything is OKAY!

In the case of my Chevy, the oil blowing by the piston rings set up a situation where it routinely would blow by them. And again, that was a few years back, engines have changed some. Hopefully the limited blow by of the oil is Mark's case hasn't cased the same problem with loose rings for him. However, it is worth getting feed back from him . . . if he sees a change.
