Help! What is going on here? I am going out to CA to do a bit of charter sailing - so while there I thought I'd look at some boats for sale. In several instances, I have found the same boat listed on Yachtworld by two brokers. What is going on here? Wouldn't a single brokerage be the listing broker? Why a second listing by a second broker - pirate broker or a legit practice? And, yes, the boats are the same - examination of the pictures shows the same CF numbers on the hull, even though the listing info sometimes varies. Opinions?

Sometimes they change ports also, if it don't

sell in Santa Barbara it goes to Channel Islands then down to MDR. Check the dates of the ads, sometimes the broker changes, a lot of brokers in different places are also affiliated. What are you looking for Oldcat ?

Two kinds of listings

There are three kinds of listings that Brokers can do 1) exclusive listings, only the listing broker can sell the boat. 2) open listings, multiple brokers can list and sell the boat 3) agency listings, only one listing broker can sell the boat but the owner retains the right to sell the boat without paying a commission to the listing broker. Most brokers will only accept exclusive listings so they usually won't inform a seller of his options.

Multiple Listing.....

Service. I think they work about the same as realators. Listing agent, broker, and selling agent. The more of these you have on the sale the bigger the commish!! Regards, Brian

Listed Several Boats on a Non-exclusive

...listing. Simply advised the brokers I was offering a five-percent commission on a non-exclusive basis. I actually had quite a bit of action, but it may have been the boats and/or time. Sold them on my own quickly tho. Several ran my supplied photo in their listings. (Sold two right off this site.) Rick D.

So Its Normal?

So it is normal that a boat may be listed by several brokers and thus the multiple listings nothing to worry about? That is the impression I get from the comments, Thanks. So - worry about the boat itself, and find a good surveyor if I find anything of interest. I am looking for a 26-30 foot keel boat, w/diesel, at or under 10' beam - the last due to local slip cost and availability. The boat will live out the worst of winter on a trailer, wet sailed in the decent part of the year. If I find my dream at the ocean in a nice area - then I take a 3-4 week sailing vacation before bringing it home. Thanks for the responses!
