The only thing I've seen that really worked to any degree is "Used Car Lot Pennants" I don't know what their real name is. 3 to the masthead, 1 tied to the bow ant 2 to the stern. Their continuous flapping seems to upset the birds. By the way, Fiberglass Hull Cleaner from West Marine does the best job of removing the ugh....stuff. Greg

Its simple
On my h27, I installed a line four inches above the spreader,from shroud to shroud. Tied it above the boot on the shroud, thru a small fairlead on front of mast and over to other boot. Works great,try it. Good luck red

Those SOB's got me good this weekend!
While in Port Jefferson this weekend, they landed on my top spreaders and did their thing all over my decks, dodger and bimini! What a mess!!! You would of thought they were there for weeks, but all the damage was done in about an hour while I was taking an afternoon nap. Needless to say I was not a happy camper! It took hours to clean the boat after I returned to the dock yesterday afternoon. I think there should be open season on them as well as the gulls.

I had read in one of the sailing rags, I think it was Sail Magazine on the last page, that someone glued aluminum nails (point up) for those who arn't inovative, on the mast head. I am sure it would work on the spreaders. use very short nails; not much is needed to make an impression. I would notify anyone going up the mast about your addition before they find it the hard way. I did buy a boat that the prior owner used wire ties on the spreaders and safety rails with the point, obviously, going up. He said it worked fine, but to me, it looked like hell. I took them off as soon as I got the boat home.

Just an idea.....
How about taking some Velcro tape, sticking one side to the top of the spreaders, then push sharp things (tacks, screws etc)with a decent head through the other tape and press it into place so that the points are exposed. That way the sharp points could be removed easily. (I dont know how well velcro lasts under UV) Good luck Derek

A few well aimed rounds from a 12 ga. shotgun should do the trick. Just be sure and not destroy too much of the boat.
