Help a new sailor.

What are those little cubbyholes on my Hunter 23.5 for? They have a nice wood cover with an open side, but no apparent use. They are located in the seatbacks on the forward part of the cockpit area. What can I do with them? They look like a good place for speakers. Should I be stressing about not having a cover for this boat. I just used a tarp to cover the old boat, but this one is nice. How do I keep it nice?

Good Question

The only thing I have ever used them for is to place my drink bottle or can before it is opened. I was going to put cup holders in the top of the teak cover but after I bought the stern rail seats I did not need to. I put my speakers under the seats as well. I think my speakers are too big to fit in there anyway. If you think of somthing good to do with them let us know.

Winch handles

They are a great storage space for winch handles, binoculars and you can even put your jib sheets in there. That's what I used them for on my 23.5

Cockput cubby holes

winch handles, gps, binocs, gloves, handheld compass, just about anything that will fit. Speakers sound like a good idea.I installed a DC outlet for the GPS on the stbd side, and least one person uses it for the shorepower outlet.

Only Hunter knows!

I suspect they built the cubbyholes to use up some scrap pieces of teak, thus causing us owners to spend half a day each season restoring the wood finish instead of spending the time more profitably and enjoyably, like sailing our boats. Who knows what evil lurks in the minds of sailboat designers. Hunter knows!
