Jim:

A company here in Texas sells wind generators, very nice powerful ones, for $600 new. I have one but yet to install it....been too busy or lazy or both :) I would much rather have that than the generator and cost should be about the same.

At 8 knots it supposed to put out 2.5 amps and at 20 knots it's supposed to put out 23 amps. The blades are a little under 3' and the motor weights 40 lbs but that's do-able on most boats.

The generator was a tad under $200... I would rather do the wind thing too but i can't shell out $600. I would rather have the $400 in my pocket for now... Plus i can run my microwave man!

Still need a sail?

Jim,
What kind of jib sail do you need? Hank on or with luff tape for furling?

So i have almost made it to the NYC, I'm probably a day away. The trip has been fun so far, weather has been great, especially lately it has been beautiful. I burnt up an impeller and my shifting linkage (cable) broke, o my spotlight broke too, that's about all the serious problems.. Other than the guy stepping my mast knew less than i did about it.. So tomorrow i have to get a cable and impeller from the local marina.. I might stick around for a few days b4 i head out in the Atlantic, so i can get everything in order. But things have been good, all tho i do have a little regret every now and then I'm glad I'm doing it.... wish i had a toughbook! thanks for the support

When you do find that impeller..get a spare to keep on board cause you might not be so lucky next time and find one at a local marina, and we've been real lucky with this mild weather here in NY but that can change real fast and cold ,wind and big waves in the Atlantic can be a bitch even during a short trip from NY to Cape May
Best of luck and keep in touch

I just stumbled on this Thread ... if it's not too late ... I'd recommend reading Annie Hill's "Voyaging on a Small Income"

Great quote above from Sterling Hayden! Now I know where I get it! Sterling was born Sterling Relyea Walter and was adopted by James Hayden.

Seems to me there was a guy, "SailorDude(?)", who was doing the same thing with some buddies. He posted alot of questions on this forum, but didn't really sound to me like he know what he was doing or getting into. I think they got to Florida, but nothing since then.

Jim ...what Marina are you at "a day away from New York" ??? Sounds like you're in my back yard! Be real careful heading through Hell's Gate in NYC ... I've heard horror stories of the currents ...

If he's heading for Florida via the Atlantic ocean (at least till he can get inside) then Hell's Gate is not near where he's heading. If he were to turn north at the East River then and only then he'd need to know about Hell's Gate and going through is easy if you time the currents correctly

-We started on Seneca lake in upstate NY, from there we took the canals to the Hudson..

- Thankfully I had a spare impeller.. I still do now, bc i just bought another at this marinas parts store.... They ordered me the wrong cable, so I'm waiting till tomorrow. *Always remember to check things...

-I had to go to the top of my mast today. The anchor light was out and my halyard was attached to the swivel at the top of my furler. It was just a bad connection with the light, and the halyard is down.. Thanks to a nice guy named Paul.. He winched me up wile my girl Erin held the rope..

- Anybody have any suggestions of what i should do from here ...Are there any spots i should try to avoid wile I'm going down the Atlantic ? Any suggestions on leaving ny harbor ?

I can't think of anything else right now I'm tired.. chow or now

Leave NY harbor with the current and you'll make good time and I would seek advice on what inlet along the Jersey shore you might want to duck into if you have to, these inlets are not for a novice.
What is your float plan to get to Florida?

For real Jim? You are sitting in the Hudson and about to head into the Atlantic in November?! Surely you see the forecast, Ida is coming up the east coast. Regardless you are going to be very cold in the near future.

As mentioned earlier you have to ride the tides, especially in and out of the inlets. I made the trip in August 2007 with my wife as crew for the Hudson to Chesapeake leg. We left from behind Lady Liberty and went in the Manasquan NJ inlet late afternoon. Next day it was out with the tide and into Barnegat Bay. We liked it and anchored for two nights. Then Atlantic City where we didn't like the anchorage so went to a small marina across from the Trump marina. Spent the night gambling. Next day down to Cape May and stayed at Utsch's marina. Used their bikes to go into town for provisions. These were easy days but you definitely need to go in and out with the tide. The currents are ferocious. We were doing 9.5 going into Atlantic City. . .at idle!

Hell Gate

RAD ... thanks for the correction ... being a newbie from north on the Hudson and hearing fellow sailors from here talk about Hell Gate as they headed south, I made a very erroneous assumption! I guess my friends headed south, but then headed NNE up the East River to get to Long Island Sound. I damn well better brush up on my geography and Charts befor next summer!

Jim, I suggest you look into Offshore Passage Opportunities (OPO). Membership provides experience in your area on other boats and crew (or captain) to help you move your boat.

Jim & Erin, by now you guys should be in Key West or maybe even Marathon. Let me know when you start back this way, the welcome mat will be out.
