I stopped at a boatyard to pick up this season's new RW pump impeller today and the mechanic had a good idea. Strip the paint from from the back plate of your water pump and polish it up. Then if you have a stoppage, burn up an impeller, and the plate gets scored, you can just turn it around to have a new running surface.

This is a great tip, and one I have actually employed before, but not on my current motor..:doh: No turning this one around....

Maine-They did that on purpose.
I'm so suspicious! I rebuilt the water pump on my yanmar, The center shaft was VERY soft stainless material. I had to be very careful not to ruin it. The threads mushroomed out a bit when I pressed out the shaft from the bearings and I had to file and retap them. When I checked the price I was not surpised to see that the whole pump was only 50% more cost than that little shaft.

Yeah the parts individually can be a killer but with some pumps and brands the rebuild kit is the way to go. A new pump for me is well over $400 clams but the rebuild kit was about $120 or so and included absolutely everything but the pump housing..


And yes Westerbeke does that on purpose..:doh:

The popular Oberdorfer pumps can't make that happen

Roger, because the faceplate is bolder than the inside of the faceplate.

The balancing advantage of the Oberdorfer is that you can remove the screws and the faceplate from the front of the pump compared to the Sherwood, which requires a contortionist to get the screws off the aft end of the faceplate. Guess that's why they made those after market screw-ie in thingies, forget their names.

Simple solution: buy a couple of extra faceplates along with your other spare parts for your pump.

Maine, ya could take the plate off (next winter?) and fill the letters with epoxy and then fine sand on a flat .. Letters stay visible and it could be reversed..

The only problem with doing this is that the face plate is a wear item, as much as the pump body is, and epoxy and metal would wear away at differing rates. I find it far more simple to spend the $13.00 on a spare rather than potentially destroying a more expensive impeller and then still needing a replacement face plate & gasket..

I just finished rebuilding my old Sherwood H-80 pump. I replaced the Bushing, two seals, the cover plate and the impeller. I'll put it back on tomorrow, Man I sure hope it works.... a new pump is 479.00
