We are new owners of a slightly used (2000) C320. Although the helm seat is convenient when sailing, it is really in the way at port, especially since it obstructs access to the port & starboard lockers. The seat has two large hotches cut into the back side walls that look like there are intended as a method for hanging the seat from another location. Our problem is that try as we may, we simply cannot discover where the helm seat can be stored safely yet close at hand. Can anyone lend their insights? Tks... James

Lifelines

James, As I recall, the seat is meant to be hung from the lifelines. We threw ours in the basement 3 years ago and haven't missed it. We couldn't see anything while sitting on it while under way, and it is an obstruction when standing at the wheel.

I like the open space without it for standing & moving around. It ought to be an "option" not a "standard" item. I usually lash one of my throwable PFD cushions to the upper rail (swim ladder) as a backrest cushion. That allows you to lean back while standing at the helm. If I need better visibility (e.g., approaching a dock or mooring), I stand straddling the two aft lockers while steering, or hold onto the backstay.

Lifelines

James, I own hull # 689 2000 model that I bought new from a Dealer. The helm seat is designed to hang from the upper lifelines, either Port or Starboard. I don't think there is a problem getting into either the starboard or port aft lockers with it in place though.I do not remove from the boat, only move it while using the swim platform. I have a rounded, raised helm cushion which does allow me to see while seated at the helm. Personally I wouldn't want to stand all day except while racing. BTW there is a active owners email group at Sailnet.com which you can join for free and ask questions direct to other owners.

We have a 2001 C320 and took the seat out and leave it on land. I do not think the seat is designed to "hang from lifeline" as others mentioned. If yours is designed to be held in place with the two rubber coated latch mechanisms and "rounds out" the aft bench seat it is the same as ours. When in place the seat does not leave adequate room in between the helmsmen and the helm. We also removed the "plexiglass" splash guard so the swim ladder is easily dropped and transom access is improved. While undersail I usually sit on the windward side gunwhales as the 40" wheel is easily reached. If the boat is healing I will stand and rest my foot on the leeward side that gives you good support. Good luck, Grant
