Helm Flutter & Play

I've been noticing increased "flutter" in the helm (Edson chain and cable) as of late. It always has fluttered a bit when shifting from neutral into hard reverse until the boat gains some momentum, but I've been noticing the same at times when there is no sidewise pressure on the rudder, as there is when sailing to windward when you normally have some weather helm. This fluttering occurs when motoring, or on a deep broad reach, etc. I suspected play in the steering system, and tightened the cables according to Edson's instructions---yet with no play in the steering system, I can still feel a slight wobble or flutter from time to time. What would a worn rudder bearing feel like? How does one test for this? Could there be an anomaly in the surface of the rudder? Is this a dangerous condition, or something that can wait for close inspection at next haulout? The archives shed little light on this...

rudder bearing

Chances are you'd notice a rudder delamination or deformity on all points of sail but the loose bearing would manifest itself as you describe with no load on the rudder face. Only way to tell for sure is pull the boat and wiggle the rudder up/down/sideways. Not dangerous- just annoying Don Illusion H 40.5
