Great trip lot of traffic like the high speed water taxis and the Staten island ferry can be a bit unnerving as there gonna come really close really FAST

I really thought it would be a trip for the memory book, as I said before I have seen some really strong moving water and have had to sail against it, now that is something I have no intention of doing again. I was mostly concerned with the fast ferry traffic as it criss crosses. I hope the deal happens.

It is wide and deep enough for comfortable navigation. Traffic varies but no need to worry about the current as everyone headed in your direction will be moving at the same relative speed over the water. Do mind the timing of the crossing as you do not want to oppose the current and will benefit largely by running with it.

I've was heading through southbound at just about slack and had to let 2 tug/barges pass me then wait in between the Brother Islands because of 2 tug/barges heading north bound up the East River last summer so that was a busy morning on the radio with these captains and a good lesson in navigation rules....3 out of the 4 were in communication with me and the fourth would not respond, one of the other Captains chimed in and asked him if he heard us and he replied "I see his mast so I know where he is"......guess he didn't like snail boats

Is generally why I wait till after slack as most of the barge and tug traffic line up for then. No worries either way .

all this discussion is making me impatient for spring launch!! this has been my first run of the season for the last few years; winter storage at worlds fair in queens and a summer mooring at 79th st basin.

We went from Northport to Atlantic Highlands in an easy day, riding the current all the way.

There is a great Andriod ap that gives state of the current at any time called Currents.

If you don't have AIS, there is an AIS ap also, but it isn't always up to speed.

make a security call because Hell Gate is a blind turn. We found the area just east of Hell Gate was a bit more of a concern as you get pushed around a bit. But all in all it was very easy.

Try to avoid the Battery at rush hour or the ferries will be a bigger issue. We slipped behind the island SE of the battery to avoid the traffic on our way south
