Anchor Choice

Tim: I just bought a claw anchor (22lbs) for my Hunter 320. We sail Lake Michigan and never anchor overnight, just for fun during the day. Will this be enough anchor for the boat? Boat weighs in at ~8,600 lbs. Looked at the 33lb which I liked, but don't think the wife would appreciate pulling it up. (She did ask if I had the windlass installed over the winter).

Welcome aborad Tim, here is you first qustion

I have a brand new 2001 Hunter 290 which came with the standard danforth anchor. In my mind this is a good lunch hook, but from what I have read not one that you would use if you wanted to get a good night sleep on the hook. First, is that true? What anchor would you recommend for overnight anchoring in mud?

Danforth anchors

I used a real Danforth anchor (made by Danforth with a forged shank) for over 10 years with weeks at a time on the hook on a Catalina 25. I always trusted the anchor and only dragged once when I had hjooked into some eel grass. It was great in sand or mud. I now use a CQR on my O'Day 35 and it is even better. I highly recommend either. Be careful of cheap knockoffs of the danforth. I don't believe they set as well or are made with the same mfg. tolerances as the Danforth. The Fortress is rated very highly also.
