Hi Andrew. The cold snap(-12°) has not affected us much beyond getting some minor frost on some inside surfaces in closed lockers. This is related to our most challenging aspect of living aboard which is moisture in the closed spaces. We need to come up with a better way to ventilate these lockers to help keep them dry. I also plan to install some insulation and run a heater hose through that side of the boat. Any locker that currently has a heater hose stays dry and the cabin and salon areas stay about 30%RH which is very comfortable.
Our new Hurricane heater has been performing great. We burn about 15 gallons of diesels a week. Even with a dead fan in our forward cabin I can leave the cabin door open and it and the v-head can rely on the salon heat to keep them warm as long as we do not shut the door. Once I get the replacement fan we will be able to shut the door again.
Up to now the winter living has been very comfortable and fairly quiet. The biggest issue we deal with are the wind storms. We face NE so that works well but we get some broadside gusts from the NW on occasion that makes the cover sound like it will be torn off. It has held fast though and I am more trusting of its stability now.
We had a party a couple of weeks ago and had about 30 people aboard. Everyone was comfortable either in the cabin or up on deck under the cover with some small space heaters. Winter parties are great in that you don't need any ice to keep the keg cold. And if anyone gets sloppy with the tap it just drains through the dock!
My next project is to finish my fuel polishing and tranfer system. I just received the fuel pump and T diverter valves. Our smaller 90 gallon fuel tank is almost empty so I would like to get most of the fuel from the 120 gallon tank transferred to the smaller tank. The heater can only run off the smaller tank. The engine can run from either.
