Hunter 34 On the hard at Lake Lewisville
My wife and I are so excited. We just bought a Hunter 34 that needs a lot of work :) It was damaged in Hurricane Wilma and the PO brought it here and began the restoration. He recently passed away. The interior is pretty far along and looks (for the most part) very well done. I plan on spending no more than a year finishing it up. We have a Oday 28 that is in very good shape after owning it for three years. We will keep it at the Marina for fun until the Hunter is ready.
Pics and a lot of questions coming.

welcome to SBO.....when i was a kid we had a shop at home and a sign posted inside that read "Anyone who enjoys work can have a hell of a time in this place." ...and fixing up a boat falls in the same category......so enjoy the refit......

wow a lake from my past ... I grew up sailing on that lake. It was Lake Dallas back then and from Richardson to Lewisville was all ranch land, my how things have changed. I think the marina we were in is now Pier 121 back then it was Yacht Harbor. If you see a 60's vintage Bristol 27 or 29 around those were my Dad's old boats. Enjoy your refit looks like work.

Welcome to the gang, Chris! Lots of H-34 owners here and a lot of great info in the site resources. Take advantage of the boat's down time and check out everything !.. Pay special attention to the chainplate anchors in the liner beams behind the settee backrests.. and the compression post and the beam it bears on.. Best to ya on the re-fit.. let us see pictures of progress/projects!

Welcome to Hunter Forum. I also have a Hunter 34 that I sail on SF Bay. Years ago I lived in Dallas and sailed lake Grapevine on my Catalina 25. The H-34 is a good light air boat which is appropriate for Texas summers. It looks like there is a heater on the boat which is useless in Texas. Good luck with the restoration.

A lot of knowledge here but the quality of the responses rests directly on the quality of the inquires. The more information provided even if it does not seem relevant may get the desired answer much quicker.

tkwhalen - I've seen a old Bristol in fact I believe it is for sale atm. Pier 121 is where we have our O day. I remember Lake Dallas, it took me forever to start calling it Lake Lewisville. I graduated from Richardson High (79) lol.

kloundie1 - Thanks, I knew about the compression post sag but not the chainplates. So here is a pic from the compression post area I hate to tear it apart to see what's been done under the trim. Can you guys see anything?

Also do you think the berth tops being done in non-marine plywood is a big deal? He used treated plywood.

Hello and welcome. The skillful search will serve you well. There are many documents saved and previous posts with your questions probably already answered. A new problem is interesting, and if you do your part a bunch of us will chime in to offer our varied opinions. Trust ones from those who have done the same job on the same boat. I have learned much by seeing how others went about the same job I am considering doing.

A previous owner had done a great job on the fiberglass beam but used a poor replacement support for the compression post. I noticed some hairline cracks in the head ceiling. I was hesitant to tackle the job but I had help from a former boss with boats he repairs regularly. I am glad I did. The telltale symptom for me was that the shrouds would not maintain tension.

I was going to suggest the same. a new post titled "unknown component". That will lure many to read and think about the identity of your part. I will wait to post until I have thought about it some more.

I went to grade school at St Paul in Richardson, started High School at Richardson and would have graduated in 75 but moved to Cleveland my sophomore year. We lived off Peyton Drive down near Valley View Park. At the time it was almost the end of civilization. The drive from there to the lake up through Addison was all Ranch land. My first visit to Dallas as an adult left me highly confused when I couldn't find Lake Dallas on the rental car map. Drove to Lake Lewisville on Freeway and through all city in shock all the way

Funny about the Bristol I wonder if it is one of my dad's old boats.
