I'll see what I can do. I won't be at the boat until tomorrow.

Aren't the colors/stripes on the bodies of resistors a clue as to their values?
Or is it too discolored to positively ID?

Google is your friend.

Article in Ocean Navigator, March 4, 2010 “scavenge the 22-ohm 1-watt resistor (red, red, black) from the circuit board, discarding the rest....”

I saw that, too, but I also saw a repair video that seemed to show multiple resistors on the board. This makes sense, since speed control is apparently accomplished via dropping resistors. This got me to thinking that a solid state speed control would be more energy efficient! (And cheap, too.)

Yea, I think what he has is actually a single speed fan based on seeing only one resistor on the board and the NPN voltage cutoff to mimic a second speed. The resistor is over-rated for that circuit implying something else is amiss like a winding short.

Looks like a 1 Watt resistor, so yes, either a component failure or something more serious.

Yes they are basically gone except the black line at the end. Even looked at it with a strong magnifying glass to see if there was any remnants left. I'm thinking about resoldering it and look on the underside. I doubt it considering it discolored the board.

the ocean nav article also said the brushes were likely bad after 2k-5k hours and to replace the motor w a new 12 v computer muffin fan and of course the new resistor... hmmm, i can buy a new caframo w 2 4 6 hr timer for about $90.. or watch my hella til the resistor starts to fry... or just go sailing without a fan.

I hear you. Fortunately this little 12dc motor is a brushless German made Bulher motor. I've seen the fans on eBay for about 60 bucks and from Hella for a hundred. Like someone said earlier resistors sometimes just go bad. I guess I'll find out when I get it replaced and monitor it for safety purposes. Maybe a 1 dollar resistor. Worth a try. Can't go without the fan. Main purpose is to keep circulating air in the forebirth to prevent condensation and mold growth.
To check to see if the motor is brushless, turn the shaft by hand and you can feel the magnets resisting while a motor with brushes turn pretty freely. Brushless last much longer are cooler running and are much more efficient. Muffin fan, I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the info.

O.K., Captain, here's your resistor values:

There are three resistors:
2 light blue body that look like 1/2W resistors: 1.1Ω 10% (brown, brown, gold, silver);
1 light brown body, looks like 1W: 22Ω 5% (red, red, black, gold).

I think you need the latter. If you don't mind waiting you can get 20 of them with free shipping form China for $1.29 on eBay. I might have one at home I could mail you, but I won't be home now 'til Monday (on the boat now).

I'll post pics and a schematic later.

The only other component is a ceramic disc capacitor, 2.2nF (222).

I see the 22 ohms but not the other 2. Notice the diff. In the motor case. According to Phil at Hella they had a manufacturing plant in China. The quality suffered and eventually pulled their facility out of there. You look at the pics I sent. What do you think?

Yikes! Yours is much different. Mine only has the three resistors and one capacitor.

Just an observation, but both of those boards have some pretty sad looking solder joints.

I hear you, but the solder on mine doesn't look nearly as bad in person, if that makes sense. It's a one-side PCB with non-plated through holes, so that's about the best you can do.

@SeaBob48 's board looks to me as if someone modified it for RF suppression reasons. I can't imagine that's how it came from Hella. Would be nice to know, though.

I sent photos of my motor bd and of vijss board to Phill at Hella. Hope he can give us the the info . We can figure this out. He will be sending me the resistor for my board and per our conversation there is only one resistor on the circuit board. This just get more interesting and confusing.

It will indeed be interesting to learn more about this. For what it's worth, this fan is available from Defender for $70. I know it's a lot of money for a fan, but that's the final option.

There's a guy on eBay who has more than 10 of these in black for $30 each, with a quantity discount, plus shipping.

Very interesting. I'll look that up. I would like to have another one. Thanks.
