Height of motor mount

I have been able to find answers to so many of the questions I have had regarding my Cat 22 with the help of the forum . Here's one that I'm having a difficult time with.
I have a Garelick eez-in motor mount I'd like to install.
The directions say:
For Sailboat Installation: Take your outboard motor bracket
with the stick taped on and place the mounting flanges on your
transom. Position the bracket so the bottom of the stick is even
with the boat’s actual waterline.

The length of the stick is determined by the distance from the clamp to the cavitation plate less 2 inches plus the travel distance.

If I use a long shaft motor won't the bracket just be higher on the transom and the same amount of shaft in the water?

In short where would be the best height to mount this bracket?

Are you saying you have a fixed mount now and want to change to lift/swing mount...?

I have no mount now. I want to install the Garelick.

I would follow the Garelick instructions to the letter. Having completely melted an impeller and water pump housing by having the water intakes come out of the water in 3 ft waves, I would even err to having too much of the shaft below the waterline.

Just my now experienced $.02.

it seems that theGarelick mounts hava a fair amount of capability for height adjustment.
They mount to the stern with 4 bolts and this gives three heights possible.

A lot would depend on which model Garelick mount you have. Different models have different amounts of travel.

Again, I would follow the instructions included with the model you bought. If you got it used w/o instructions, they are available online at the Garelick website.

I guess......if I had it to do, I'd measure the depth of the motor shaft, know how deep YOUR boat rides in the water, and put as much of the motor as I could in the water within reason. Like as already been said, ya don't want to wet the head/engine, and I don't know about your waters, but in Southport, that stern can ride WAY up. My water line in calm waters is just barely touching the bottom gudgeon, so....
Now this is provided I don't take on any really big girls.
I like the ballast, but lovely bride is kind of picky about such things..

Sounds like they want you to make up a "stick"? the length of "your" motor to set the depth on "your" particular boat...

Doesn't matter if it's long shaft or short shaft or what we suggest as ride height.. the stick sets the proper depth for your gear...

I want a new mount because:

1. My tiller sticks out in front of the motor and prevents tilting while down.

2. Raising the motor without tilting leaves the skeg and part of the prop in the water.

3. Tilting while raised actually makes the stern 1" deeper, reducing ability to point.

4. Motor flops around due to worn joints.

And maybe the factory backstay being where it is?
