Riprunwi: Does you C22 have a boom vang? If it does, that sail trim control is a better choice to adjust twist than the mainsheet. When you use the mainsheet to adjust twist you're also adjusting angle of attack and draft position.
Do not mess with the backstay adjuster. When you crank on the backstay adjuster you might think your adjusting the draft depth and flattening the mainsail but you're not. If the C22 had a "bendy" mast like a "J" boat you would pull the fullness out of the middle of the sail but with the "telephone pole" mast on your C22 you can't bend it. All your doing is "raking" the mast backwards. The boat thinks you picked up the mast and moved it backwards and the boat will now have more weather helm than you want to deal with.
All your questions could be answered on the SAIL TRIM FORUM. There are folks over there, many of whom are C22 sailors, that really know their onions about sail trim and you'll get the straight skinny every time. If someone over there gives incorrect advise immediately about 5 people jump all over it. Over the past 8 years or more we've heard every question you could ever ask - some over a million times!!! You're geting good advise here also but some of it is unfortunately incorrect, which you'll find out if you follow my advise and test it this spring. I'll bet you can't wait until spring --right???
