HOW FAR CAN YOU HEEL OVER CATALINA 30 AND STILL CONTROL HER. MY 37 ODAY WOULD ALWAYS RIGHT HERSELF. MY WIFE THINKS IAM A CHICKEN BUT SHES NOT AT THE HELM

Level of Heel

Victor, The level of heel should be very manageable on the C-30, as it's a fairly stiff boat. With around 30 knots on the nose, a reefed main and about 75% of jib in 8' seas across the beam I had about 15 to 20 degrees of heel. I had consistent speed of around 6.5 knots (just under hull speed). Occasionally I'd bury the rail briefly if a wave hit just right, but that only happened once or twice. It was a tough 7 hour sail, but very exhilarating. At no time did I feel like I wasn't in control of the boat. I had an almost neutral helm because the sails were balanced, and she handled the conditions like a champ. That being said, I've seen boats with improper sail trim round up in 15 knots of wind and have difficulty keeping a course. The "still control her" part of your question has more to do with your sail trimming skills than it does with the fact that you're on a C-30. Assuming your sails are properly set, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I hope this helps! Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull# 632

20 to 25 Degrees

Victor, I have a 30 tall rig and find that it sails best at about 20 degrees up to 25 degrees, after that it slows down. Beating into waves the less the heel the better. You can keep it under control with lots more heel but why go slower. Feels exhilarating I guess but not particulary good sailing. As stated by Allen, proper sail trim for the conditions is the answer. I never sail with the rail under except when I mishandle a gust. No reason to. David Four Feathers

Lauraine '85 C30 "Chalice"

Hi Victor, It sounds like you're enjoying your C30

The C30 was designed to sail best when she's fairly upright in the water. We seem to achieve the best speeds at 10-15 degrees with virtually no weather helm under full sail in 10-15kts of wind. Beyond 18 kts, we reduce sail. If you have full sail up and you're heeling far enough to bury the rail, you're probably not going as fast as you could properly trimmed and you're also putting unnecessary strain on your rigging and your steering IMO. You'll go faster and have a better ride if you straighten her up. Have fun!

Full Sail

Lauraine, by "full sail" what size genny are you flying? I have read the same thing, the Cat 30 sails best when flat. Somewhere I read that 11 degrees of heel was optimal.

Hi Art, We have a 150% genoa on a ProFurl furler.

Our main is a loosefoot cut with a full roach and the top two battens are full. The bottom two are partial.
