heel inclination for oday 27

As a new owner of an oday 27 I would like to know what is the heel angle optimum for this boat. any ideas?

It all a matter of

comfort level. The boat will probably preform best at between 20 - 25 degrees, at least on my 25 that's about right. Beyond that you are losing speed. But 20 degrees "feels" like a lot to a new sailor, so start easy, and work your way up to when you crew and you become more comfortable. Heel Angle

I sail a 272LE and 20 Degrees is pretty much the optimum angle. Everything I have read or experienced pretty much proves this out. Over 20 you start loosing sail effiency and it becomes increasingly difficult to trim the boat overall. Keep in mind also as your heel increases the control angle of the rudder changes as well. Now having said that, holding 20 degrees is dificult. I sail the great lakes and when there is enough wind to heel 20 there is quite alot of chop. So it works out to be 15-25.

25 is good for a 27

i have an older oday 27,1975...at about 25 to 30 my knot meter looses water flow , the meter goes to zero..and just before that happens the boat is gainiing speed instead of losing.

Flat is Fast

Hi Javier -I agree with the others that boats that heel to far (20 deg +) are often over-powered. When boats get overpowered, they typically want to round up into the wind (weather helm), so the helmsman needs to fight to hold the boat down on a course by steering off the wind. The offset rudder is now acting as a brake, creating a lot of drag. Travel down, then reef if necessary to keep the boat on her feet and slicing through the water.Have fun pushing the limits!Trevor
