I've seen it said several times that most dry cleaners will clean flags for free. YMMV, though.... brought it home and ran it through the washing machine with my dress shirts. Not entirely sure about the etiquette of that.......
End-to-end, or side-to-side?Do like the US Navy does, sew 2 of them together, lasts 6x as long.
+1... and I believe I can still fire on a pirate flagged vessel. If your flags are not lasting long, are you following proper protocol? That is to put it up at 800 and take it down at sunset. I am always surprised when I see boats flying huge American flags from the spreaders, 24/7, even on unattended boats. You would think that someone who considered themselves patriotic enough to flag a big flag would at least show some respect for the flag they fly. When I am off shore I don't even fly a flag. I am not a raging patriot but it is un-seaman like and disrespectful to keep a flag up all the time. A nice fresh flag goes 2/3 up the back stay when I am close to shore. This is kind of a pet peeve of mine. Don't even get me going on those pirate flags some people feel the need to fly, Steve.
If you don't want to climb your rig to install on the backstay, you can lash a small block to your topping lift at 2/3 height with a prusik knot, and run a signal cord to hoist your flag. Tie it off on the boom end. I use an continuous loop that can be adjusted for topping lift length. How do you have it rigged on backstay & doesn't get in the way of the main/topping lift?
Wow! I think I'd have that one framed under glass!...I have a very special flag that flew over my Battalion in Vietnam. It was presented to me by my Colonel upon my departure.
I think a lot of you guys know how much I care about OUR flag. Chief
