Try Harbor Frieght, they have a good quality, all sewn, 3 X 5' for only $9.00. I leave mine up 24-7 with a solar powered spot, and get about a year service from them. The price is cheep enough to carry a spare!

I would expect Harbor Freight sells an American flag made in China. Many of us will not knowingly fly an American flag not made in America. Chief

If you want something that is at the smallest 3x5, one of the easiest ways to get a decent flag that is also quite inexpensive is to contact your congressman and get a flag flown over the capitol. Last time I checked, it was around $20-something for a 3x5 that holds up pretty well (I use them at my house). The exact details of how you order it varies by office, but you can also have it flown in honor of whomever you want and you will get a certificate with the flag to that effect.

... brought it home and ran it through the washing machine with my dress shirts. Not entirely sure about the etiquette of that.......
I've seen it said several times that most dry cleaners will clean flags for free. YMMV, though.

Go online to the VFW store and you will find NiGlo and ToughTex flags. 20 & 30 dollars each. This way you support our National VFW as well. Of course I am a life member. Chief

If your flags are not lasting long, are you following proper protocol? That is to put it up at 800 and take it down at sunset. I am always surprised when I see boats flying huge American flags from the spreaders, 24/7, even on unattended boats. You would think that someone who considered themselves patriotic enough to flag a big flag would at least show some respect for the flag they fly. When I am off shore I don't even fly a flag. I am not a raging patriot but it is un-seaman like and disrespectful to keep a flag up all the time. A nice fresh flag goes 2/3 up the back stay when I am close to shore. This is kind of a pet peeve of mine. Don't even get me going on those pirate flags some people feel the need to fly, Steve.
+1... and I believe I can still fire on a pirate flagged vessel.

How do you have it rigged on backstay & doesn't get in the way of the main/topping lift?
If you don't want to climb your rig to install on the backstay, you can lash a small block to your topping lift at 2/3 height with a prusik knot, and run a signal cord to hoist your flag. Tie it off on the boom end. I use an continuous loop that can be adjusted for topping lift length.

...I have a very special flag that flew over my Battalion in Vietnam. It was presented to me by my Colonel upon my departure.
I think a lot of you guys know how much I care about OUR flag. Chief
Wow! I think I'd have that one framed under glass!

skygazer: Thanks for your comments. My flag is in a triangle display, glass front hardwood case. My family will drape my casket with it when I die. I served 21 yrs, 8 war campaigns and 2.5 yrs in combat zones. You might say that I kinda like that ol' flag. Thanks for caring. Chief

I spent a lot of years in the US Navy and I sure didn't see any flags sewn together! Chief

A Signalman on the USS Wichita got one of those Fraud, Waste and Abuse awards for the idea of sewing them together, if I remember correctly the Navy figured they would save $165k/yr in flag costs, that was 25 years ago.

I have had pretty good luck with the WM brand so far. Replaced mine this past season as the old one (10+ years old) because it was getting faded a bit. Look for good edge stitching, non rusting grommets and a material which takes UV well.

I do a lot of long term, long distance cruising.
To save on flag expenses, when off shore and in stink weather, etc., I fly a small heavy weight 'storm flag' - meets the legal requirements, doesnt flog like a normal sized flag and is much cheaper to continually replace.
I do fly oversized flags ... proudly, because theyre not faded nor 'beat to crap' ... when in mild weather and when entering a port, or foreign country, etc.

For any flag I usually add many many rows of polyester or 'Tenara' (Goretex) stitching to the aft end, as that's where the 'fraying' always starts. To retard fading (on polyester), I occasionally spray on 303 Fabric Protector (Aerospace Protectant) http://www.amazon.com/303-30313-Aerospace-Protectant-fl/dp/B00KN0UOEE/ref=pd_bxgy_auto_img_y
