We're going thru flags pretty quickly. Tried a variety of makers and some labeled heavy duty. Not.

Anyone getting truly long durable life out of their flag?

Yes. Annin Flagmakers (from a variety of suppliers). 100% American made. Their Nyl-glow nylon flags with UV treatment fly better in light breezes, have proper sewn stripes and stars and are a good choice for periodic use. They can handle a gale. For more constant use try their premium polyester flag labeled Tough-Tex, it can take constant sun and lots of wind. My current Nyl-Glow has seen 5 rough sailing seasons, and shows slight wear.

Re: heavy duty flag

We get 5+ years out of our WM Taylor flags, sometimes have to stitch an edge. Know there are others out there that are better, but the price isn't too bad. Plus I get to switch from flag to ensign...:)

Re: heavy duty flag

If your flags are not lasting long, are you following proper protocol? That is to put it up at 800 and take it down at sunset. I am always surprised when I see boats flying huge American flags from the spreaders, 24/7, even on unattended boats. You would think that someone who considered themselves patriotic enough to flag a big flag would at least show some respect for the flag they fly. When I am off shore I don't even fly a flag. I am not a raging patriot but it is un-seaman like and disrespectful to keep a flag up all the time. A nice fresh flag goes 2/3 up the back stay when I am close to shore. This is kind of a pet peeve of mine. Don't even get me going on those pirate flags some people feel the need to fly, Steve.

We get 3 to 4 months in winter and maybe 6 in summer. Not been able to do better recently, so we wrap it around the mizzen sheet unless we want it to fly. I seem to remember flags lasting much longer back when, but then another tropical cyclone would come by and decimate any flag we left up. We would send those to family and friends as novelty items; they were an unusual, but interesting, gift.

Re: heavy duty flag

If a light is shining on the flag it can be left out at night is my understanding. I sure know wrapping around the mizzen sheet is not proper! Chief

Re: heavy duty flag

If you are leaving your national ensign up 24/7, you are breaking etiquette. Chief is correct about the light and the other thing.

I only raise my flag in daytime when the boat is attended..... Never at night

Re: heavy duty flag

I don't leave her up at night on my boat either. I do leave her out at night when I am RVing in Arizona though. I put out a nice solar light that shines on her all night. Old glory looks great moving in the light at night. I bring her in if the weather is bad or too much wind.
I have a very special flag that flew over my Battalion in Vietnam. It was presented to me by my Colonel upon my departure.
I think a lot of you guys know how much I care about OUR flag. Chief

How do you have it rigged on backstay & doesn't get in the way of the main/topping lift?

Re: heavy duty flag

averman: Iam sure there are many ways but I use a tiny pully clamped 2/3 way up the backstay w/ 1/8" cord. Use halyard shroud cleat to secure cord. Nylon cleats are at Amazon for 4 bucks. Chief

My Dura-Lite http://www.dura-lite.com flag has held up pretty well, but it definitely hasn't seen the kind of wear you're subjecting yours to. It's at least 16 years old, on a teak pole at the pushpit rail, I recall the P.O. only flew it on holidays or special occasions, I fly it only when I'm on the boat, and of course we only have about a five or six month sailing season here. No one else mentioned Dura-Lite and it seams pretty well made to me, so maybe it's one more brand to consider.

As for flag etiquette, I do take it down when rain is forecast, but have to admit I don't always remember to take it down at night. It was looking a bit dirty this season, so I brought it home and ran it through the washing machine with my dress shirts. Not entirely sure about the etiquette of that......but hey, at least they're Brooks Brothers shirts (Still made in the U.S.A.)....and the flag looks much better now.
